“Who the Hell Are You?”: Angry Mother Lucille Forced Arrogant Shaquille O’Neal to Shed $400 Million Net Worth Pride

4 time NBA champion, Shaquille O’Neal was drafted by the Orlando Magic in 1992. The contract stated that in 4 years, he would receive $17.4 million dollars. He also signed an endorsement deal with Reebok. So at the mere age of 18, O’Neal’s earnings were totalling in millions. These were big digits and notes that Shaq had never seen before. In an interview with GaryVee, Shaq stated that the money made him arrogant. But all it took was four words from his mother, Lucille O’Neal, for him to lose this arrogance.

Mama O’Neal and Shaquille share a very close relationship. Mama O’Neal was always seen on the sidelines supporting his son. For her, Shaq is just a stage name so she calls him by his first name, Shaquille. Over the years, interviews and advertisements have featured this mother-son duo. Fans find their bond wholesome and cute. Having said that, his mother has never stopped herself from calling Shaquille out for his behaviors and actions.

Mama O’Neal calls Shaquille O’Neal out

In the interview with GaryVee, Shaq was quick to narrate an incident from his life that instantly humbled him. He stated that when he started making the big bucks, arrogance took over him. This led to him arguing with his parents, something he never did before.

Following this, first, his stepfather warned him. He said, “Be careful who you step on, on your way to success.”  Then Mama O’Neal said, “Who the hell are you?”. These words are all it took for Shaq to get rid of his arrogance. She also reminded him that making good money or being a basketball player doesn’t make him better than anyone else.

Mama O’Neal taught him very early on that “it costs you nothing to be nice.”  This became Shaquille O’Neal’s life mantra.

O’Neal on his favorite phrase

During the same interview, Shaq stated that his favorite phrase is, “always be humble.” He mentioned that he doesn’t like to gloat about his philanthropic work. For him, he contributes to society with love. And all he wants to do is make people happy.

Further, he added it hurts to see homeless people. He stated that he wished to have an answer to this issue. While talking about this, Shaq had a piece of advice for everyone. He said, “Always remain humble, and remain kind.”
