Being an NBA star comes with its own set of responsibilities. After playing in the NBA for 17 years, Richard Jefferson has seen how athletes are taken advantage of by people if they are not careful enough. After a revelation from Aaron Gordon, Jefferson remembered a story from his past where some players were robbed due to their trusting nature.

During a recent episode of Curious Mike, Aaron Gordon talked about a rather awkward experience he had while going out on a date. As the former Cleveland Cavaliers player heard that the girl whom Gordon went on a date with had googled “Aaron Gordon’s net worth” right before they met, Jefferson revealed that these actions are more common than they seem.

Although Richard Jefferson did not name where it was, he revealed that during his time in the NBA, there was a woman in one city who promoted a club. So, according to the 2016 NBA champion, “It didn’t matter what time you landed. It didn’t matter what day it was. She would pack out the clubs even if you landed there late; the club would stay open for another hour.

So whenever the NBA players were in town, the club would stay open late. This made sure that the players could all have a good time. But it did not end well for two players a few years later. Jefferson revealed that once, two guys from the NBA spent the night with some people that they met at the club. But little did they know what would happen when they woke up. Jefferson said, “They wake up; all their jewelry is gone.”

Richard Jefferson did not expect things like this to still happen with NBA players. He was reminded of it after hearing the Denver Nuggets star’s story. But at the end of the day, it is the responsibility of the athletes to take care of themselves. They should try their best to not get taken advantage of by people they are not sure of.

Although fans don’t often think about it, the money the NBA players have can attract bad people into their lives. Some have even lost money because of their assistants, their managers, and even close relationships.

Charles Barkley has revealed in numerous interviews that his agent, Lance Luchnik, lost almost all his money. This made Barkley go broke by the age of 25. His agent made bad financial decisions and did not pay any taxes, which led to the 1993 NBA MVP losing all his money.

Although times have changed significantly since then, the players are still by themselves at the end of the day. They should be smart and responsible enough to take care of themselves and not fall into traps set up by people.

I did not follow the traditional route to become a journalist, but my love for basketball and writing has brought me here. Seeing LeBron James? Cleveland Cavaliers make the iconic comeback from a 1-3 deficit in 2016 changed everything for a young engineering aspirant within me. Rather than simply looking at the game, I love to analyze how each player contributes to a team using BPM (Box Plus Minus) and other advanced metrics.
