Carmelo Anthony: Increased “Eyeballs” Have Contributed to Global Appeal of Women’s Sports

Carmelo Anthony spoke about the increased global appeal of women’s sports. Coverage of women’s sports has been an issue for years. But, fortunately, things have changed now. As more people speak about the games, the sports begin to gain more attention. Melo is also one of them. Just recently, he was selected as the draw host for the men’s and women’s Olympic Basketball Tournaments in Paris 2024. The event took place on March 19 at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Miles.
During the news conference, the legend shared a few words on the increased global attention on women’s sports. “I think people are able to see more and more of the women’s game and start to identify with players and support in a way,” said Carmelo. While responding to a question about the support not being there for women’s sports, Melo said, “I just think over the years…the support has been there, but the eyeballs on the women’s basketball game haven’t been there. So I think the opportunity now with broadcasting and being able to get on all these platforms and streaming sites and get eyeballs to women’s games is what’s helping.”
Another star who joined Melo was former basketball player, Penny Taylor. As the retired NBA star mentioned, there are indeed new opportunities that have paved the way for women athletes. But that wouldn’t have been possible without the talented players we see now in the sport.

The shining stars of women’s basketball game
Regardless of numerous arguments, women athletes didn’t get enough attention and recognition in the past. It’s painful to think about how many incredible talents must have gone unnoticed. Making a huge change are players like Caitlin Clark who are leading the way for aspiring female athletes. One such stunning player is the 2018 MVP, Breanna Stewart. The Carolina native boasts of two WNBA championships, two FIBA World Cup titles, and two Olympic gold medals. Last year, the former New York Knicks player was spotted at a New York Liberty game over Washington Mystics, 90-85. He was also seen sharing a quick exchange with Liberty star Breanna Stewart to congratulate her.
Another shining star of the sports is Aja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces. Her prowess in the game can be well understood by her impressive series of three WNBA MVP award achievements. Alyssa Thomas, Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, Sabrina Ionescu, Brittney Griner, and more are the best players who are making waves in women’s basketball sports. The players have also begun to get more coverage with an increase in their true supporters.
