The Boston Celtics have established themselves as the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. In a recent move, the Philadelphia 76ers have acquired Paul George to join Joel Embiid. The duo is said to have the potential to threaten the Celtics’ ability to retain their top spot in the Eastern Conference. However, to successfully do this, former basketball player Matt Barnes has listed a crucial factor.

Recently appearing in the podcast, Matt Barnes highlighted the impressive skill and performance of the overall team stating how the Embiid-George duo are the most valuable assets for the 76ers. While he recognized the potential they carry, he also pointed out their weak spot as well. He said, “I think overall the biggest thing for them is going to be able to maintain health amongst their two stars or two out of their three stars. Uh, Embiid and, and George, and if they’re able to do that, you know you put them right up there with the Boston,” said Barnes on the LeBatardShow

The 2022-23 MVP suffered a knee injury when Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga fell on his leg. Embiid had to undergo a lateral meniscus surgery for his left knee. As the 76ers are highly dependent on their top player, Embiid’s return resulted in a spectacular win over the Oklahoma City Thunder during the last season.

Moving on, Paul George’s entry into the 76ers would take some pressure off Embiid’s shoulders by providing support on both ends of the court. However, George has been subjected to some serious injuries, which could have been career-altering back in 2014. He suffered a compound fracture in his right leg, which made him miss several games for the season. Even in the last season, he missed a few games due to a knee injury and illness.

The major contributing factor that will decide the Philadelphia 76ers’ top position this season is the health of their key players. For now, everything looks great on paper.

A new Philadelphia 76ers with the Embiid-George Duo

Joel Embiid emerges as the Philadephia 76er’s top player due to his remarkable ability to dominate and lead the franchise to several victories. During the last season, he averaged 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. And now that the 76ers have signed a four-year contract with Paul George, the duo can look to compete with the top franchises.

George’s stint with the Los Angeles Clippers where he was regarded as a great player could also prove fruitful to the 76ers. He averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game in the last season. The addition of George to the team would lift some pressure off Embiid, as he can contribute towards offensive and defensive duties.

The stakes are high for the 76ers this upcoming season. With Paul George officially becoming a 76er, they would have a great balance at both ends of the court and can challenge the dominant position currently enjoyed by the Celtics.
