Magic Johnson tested positive for HIV in 1991. Unfortunately cutting short his career at the top of his game. Notably, the Los Angeles Lakers legend had just won the NBA MVP award for the third time in 1990. So this came as a major shock to him, everyone associated with him, and the fans. Many were worried about the wellbeing of Johnson and some feared the worst. After all, there was a lack of knowledge about the disease. Even Magic thought it was a “death sentence“. On the other hand, the lack of knowledge also stirred some controversy and Michael Jordan helped ease the situation.

Magic announced his retirement immediately after finding out about the disease. At the time, his wife Cookie was pregnant with their child. Fortunately, both Cookie and the unborn child were not infected which brought a huge sigh of relief.

Magic Johnson was the Showtime Lakers’ star man, and the fans loved him. So of course, the community was heartbroken when they found out about Johnson’s infection and subsequent retirement. However, it was clear that the fans wanted to see him on the hardwood when Magic was voted to the 1992 All-Star game even after retiring. But the same can’t be said about some players as there were fears about being infected while playing with the five-time NBA champion.
Notably, superstar Karl Malone openly expressed his fears. Even though many remained quiet in public, there was a reluctance to play with Magic. This is where Michael Jordan came in and removed all fears and Johnson once noted his sincere gratitude.

According to the book, There Is No Next by Sam Smith, Magic said, “Embracing me at the 1992 All-Star game and signaling it was OK to embrace those with the disease. Because it was his league. Everything was centered around Michael…When he came over that just relaxed everybody else. He opened the door for the world to accept.”
He also stated that MJ was there for him when he announced his retirement. In fact, the Chicago Bulls legend was the first one to support Magic’s foundation and be a part of it. Furthermore, this also arguably led to Magic securing his place in the 1992 Dream Team.

Magic Johnson’s fear
Magic Johnson once revealed how he felt after his HIV diagnosis.
Even the 12x NBA All-Star did not have much knowledge about the disease and feared the worst. He said, “What I was going through, thinking it was a death sentence, ?cause I didn?t know no better.”

As terrifying as that sounds, Magic did not let this deter him. He knew he was not alone and chose to lean on the experiences of those who were dealing with HIV before him.
“All the people that were involved get to tell their side of it, and I think that?s what makes it great,”?explained Magic.
