The NBA has seen a growing trend of expectations from coaches. While the position was always one of importance, the requirement for the job has seen a dramatic change. As a result, more experiments and new coaches have become commonplace in the NBA. Among the newer crop of coaches, the Utah Jazz hiree has been among the better ones joining the association. With his birthday leading to some celebrations, one of the team’s owners, Dwyane Wade, was quick to join in on the party.

A sweet message on his Instagram had Flash referring to Coach Will Hardy as “The coolest!” and a “Happy Birthday Coach!”  to round out his message. And, safe to say, looking at the pictures shared by the Utah Jazz team account, it is hard to argue with his assessment.

While the team hasn’t made a playoff push yet, Hardy has still been an instant success. Given a torn-down roster in its rebuilding phase, the team has exceeded expectations in both seasons. And the key remains his offense, which is a highlight each night despite the personnel.

With a ball-movement, team-first style that prioritizes the next-man-up mentality, and giving up a good shot for a great one, Will has put a modern spin on the vaunted San Antonio Spurs offense under arguably the best coach of all time in Gregg Popovich.

During his time in the NBA, Hardy spent 6 years with the team as an assistant coach. And the influence it had on him is clear as day to see. But, what was perhaps even more surprising about the whole wish was who was absent from it.

Dwyane Wade omits home ties

During his career, Wade would suit up for a lot of coaches. However, in hindsight, none have been as amazing at the job as Erik Spoelstra. The second-highest-paid coach in league history has been a staple of Miami Heat basketball since he took over, and is rightfully seen as one of the best. With 6 Finals appearances and 2 Championships, his tenure has been something to behold.

So, to see Dwyane bestow the “coolest” honor on someone else was a bit of a shocker. After all, while he may be as intense as they come, a pre-requisite for the Miami team, his lighthearted side does come out during interviews and coaching huddles.

As a result, the comment from D-Wade did seem a bit odd.

One take at a time

My earliest memories of a connection to basketball was through its popularity in my school. Eventually, that gave way to a genuine passion for the sport and the rest, is history. Whether it be gameplay, the tactics, the narratives, or the sheer art on display, the game speaks to me in a way few other things can.
