Very few athletes tend to take the jump to another sport. But, like most things basketball, Michael Jordan was the first. While his foray away from basketball was to America’s other Big 4 sport, baseball, his interests were multifold. Even though his investments since retiring stray towards racing, a view of MJ on the golf course isn’t an uncommon sight. However, Michael understands his limitations on the circuit. Or, that’s if you believe Tony Finau.

Speaking about their first experiences in 06-07, Finau revealed his encounter with the GOAT. “We lined up and played some gold. I was just kind of an up comer so he’s always been incredible to me.” The question then came to any bets that the duo might have had.

After all, the 5x NBA MVP is famous for his gambling exploits. “At that time, you know I was still very good…He didn’t want to play me in a straight-up match…When he plays against Pros, I think MJ usually has to get a couple shots at least a side. But, yeah I played with MJ.

Tony Finau’s first time meeting Michael Jordan

During the episode, Finau spoke about his first interaction with the former owner of the Charlotte Hornets. Still up-and-coming on the circuit, the meeting happened around 2006-07. “I was actually in Park City, Utah. He was a member at this club…And I was invited.”

So, I’m hitting on the range and somebody says to me, ‘Keep it up, young buck,’ and I just kind of like look back and it’s I’m like, ‘Wait a sec.’ I had to take a second look and so I ended up, you know, meeting him there.” Soon after, the two were at the range having matches.

Even though their meetings happen at the “coolest club” The Grove, Finau’s admiration and fandom for Mike is apparent throughout the podcast. While he may not have built a career in the sport, it is clear to see the impact MJ had on another sport.
