The NBA has a rich history of classic moments. Whether it be Air Jordan, “blocked by [LeBron] James“, or any iconic Mike Breen “Bang”, history is strife with such moments. However, there have been very few instances where the moment takes place off the hardwood. But, ask any NBA fan, and they’ll know of Allen Iverson and the infamous press conference rant. However, as it turns out, that cult classic of a moment wasn’t all that it appeared to be on the surface.

Instead, there was a genuine pain that the Philadelphia 76ers legend was suffering. One that he has to revisit anytime the moment is brought up nowadays. Talking to former ESPN employee Rachel Nichols, the 6-footer would bear his heart out about the circumstances at that moment.

“People would say it’s the funniest thing in the world…To me, it was not funny. Like, you had no idea what I was going through in my life.” Further, he would even express regret about his speech that day. “I wish I could take it back and do it another way.” 

“I wouldn’t have gone on the podium. I would’ve explained to people, ‘How do you think I do all of these things on the basketball court? You can look at my resume. There’s no way you can do all these things without practicing.” 

The Denver Nuggets veteran understands why people bring it up, though. “When people come up to me and say it now… People talk all the time. Sometimes it’s a natural reaction – When you see somebody and the first thing that comes to their mind. Like, you see Michael Jackson – you start singing You Are Not Alone, Thriller, Beat It.”

But, “What’s wrong with saying, ‘What up Mike?'” But the conversation would then take on a far more emotional route. “I lost my best friend.” Because, while the moment was iconic, a lot more than just the speech went into it.

The excruciating circumstances Allen Iverson had to go through before “Practice”

During that time, both the personal and professional lives of the former MVP weren’t ideal. The death of his best friend, along with a less-than-ideal meeting with Billy King, had many speculating about Allen’s departure from the City of Brotherly Love. 

Even his children got involved in the mess. “My kids could go to their school and tell their classmates and their teachers. Because, you know, they were asking them, ‘Tell your Daddy, don’t leave'” Unfortunately, fans remember one moment of weakness at the podium from a Hall of Fame career, and the best dribbling package, though not everyone acknowledges it, was the most “bothersome” part of it all.

When you next walk up to Allen Iverson, do not talk to him about practice.
