What is a dynasty made of? What amount of credit goes to the man foreseeing the entire operation? Unfortunately, these are the questions we did not get clear answers to during The Last Dance documentary. Instead, the entire special became a Michael Jordan lovefest. While intricately produced, beautifully motivating, and a compelling watch, it did take liberties with its history. As a result, Scottie Pippen went mad at Jordan for his portrayal in the show. Alas, that was just the first domino to fall.

Even though most players saw their value undermined, no one received as direct a run down as late GM Jerry Krause. Rather than the mastermind behind constructing and upgrading the roster, Krause was seen as the one to break up the band. As a result, the perception around him went through a dramatic overhaul.

The reaction at the United Center last night during the Ring of Honor ceremony even has fans turning against Michael. Bulls fan and journalist Matt Peck said, “By God, you know what? Tonight, I’m a little bit mad at MJ for the Last Dance and what it did to this man’s legacy. We get it, MJ. You have an ego, it’s the biggest ego in the room and you’re a winner and you’re a 6x Champion and we all will worship the freaking ground you walk on for the rest of time.”

But, that did not give him the right to do what he did. “But MJ, who was not there tonight, bears some responsibility. For the people, whoever they were, ’cause they sure as s**t were not real Bulls fans, yelling and booing a crying widow. MJ is responsible for this.”

The true shocker is the people making these claims. “And I am a Bulls fan who has worshipped MJ since I was old enough to walk and watch basketball on television. But that is disgusting behavior. The Bulls are not 6x time World Champions without Jerry Krause.”

In the end, the message is rather simple. “Michael Jordan is responsible for this.”

The Chicago Bulls were ready to honor some of their biggest members with a Ring of Honor. Jerry Krause’s widow was the one accepting the honor on her late husband’s behalf. However, rather than applaud the man’s efforts in building a dynasty, many in the arena rained boos down upon Krause.

His wife was reduced to tears in a truly shameful display, resulting in these comments by many members of the media and fans watching alike. But, Krause isn’t the only one whose impact was severely diminished, or outwardly ignored in the documentary.

Pippen has gone on record multiple times to state his distaste for the entire series. Recently, while naming Hakeem Olajuwon as his toughest opponent, Horace Grant from those dynastic teams mentioned the lack of time given to Luc Longley. According to Grant, Luc was the voice of reason in the locker room constantly.

However, the episodic series failed to mention or illustrate that point at all. Could the doc have been a farce to boost MJ’s ego as this video claims? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

One take at a time

My earliest memories of a connection to basketball was through its popularity in my school. Eventually, that gave way to a genuine passion for the sport and the rest, is history. Whether it be gameplay, the tactics, the narratives, or the sheer art on display, the game speaks to me in a way few other things can.
