Makeup and men. Thanks to Dwyane Wade putting on nail polish, the conversation around him has taken a dramatic turn. Stars from the entertainment world like Mase are quick to call him out. According to him, it was equivalent to “Michael Jordan in lingerie”. However, given the respect he has in the league, the NBA brotherhood has stood behind Wade, no questions asked. The Miami Heat legend found another supporter in a rather unexpected place, however.

John Salley, Detroit Pistons legend, and Jordan rival, wasn’t having any of the slander. Instead, he chose to view the entire situation as something beautiful. “I guess, let me say this, self-expression should only be your self-expression.”

If that’s the way D-Wade wants to express himself, we should celebrate that. Like, if he feels comfortable in having nail polish on his nails, no matter what it is. You supposed to… he was being honored for his basketball, and that’s the way we should leave it,” he said.

Throughout his interview, Salley offered a very different side to him than what fans are used to seeing. During his time on the chair, he would even pay respects to his onetime hated rival Michael, crowning him the only one that got me.”

While he was willing to take a calmer approach, the 3x NBA Champion also had a similar mindset in his response to the entire situation.

Despite the backlash from some sectors of the fanbase, the overall response to Dwyane’s fashion choices over the years has been positive. However, with the extreme diagnosis of his nail polish look, the 2006 Finals MVP had to respond.

Rather than focus on the hate, Wade understood the consequences of his choices. To him, people either didn’t understand, or he was ahead of the curve. But that did not take away from his growth and he was easily willing to forgive them. To him, what he likes and feels good about his body were the questions of primary essence.

One take at a time

My earliest memories of a connection to basketball was through its popularity in my school. Eventually, that gave way to a genuine passion for the sport and the rest, is history. Whether it be gameplay, the tactics, the narratives, or the sheer art on display, the game speaks to me in a way few other things can.
