The Super Bowl Weekend: perhaps the greatest and biggest event of the US sports calendar year is a celebration. Whether you like the sport or not, the air is buzzing with a different level of excitement when the Big Game rolls around. But, while the two best teams in the nation battle it out for the Vincent Lombardi Trophy, the rest of the teams watch on from the sidelines. As a result, it isn’t always a joyous occasion for their fanbase. In the case of Metta World Peace, his team hasn’t given him much reason to cheer for in nearly three decades. So, he continues to sit this one out.

Taking to X, the former Los Angeles Lakers legend would reveal his unfortunate situation: Every year the @nyjets don’t make the Super Bowl, I just eat soup out of a bowl.” Given it’s been over a decade since they made the playoffs, this time of year isn’t kind to the former Defensive Player of the Year.

But, in his tweet, Metta revealed how he’s asked himself the question every year, regardless. “Metta, you watching the superbowl?” But, every year, without fail, his answer, while referring to himself in the third person, remains the same.

Metta – ‘I can’t because I just ordered soup in a bowl. Tell them I said good luck though’.” While the man, formerly known as Ron Artest, chooses to miss out on the biggest sporting event of the calendar year, the rest of America looks on.

If there was ever a day for Metta to change his plans for the Super Bowl Weekend, then this was the year. Like he’d seen Kobe Bryant do a million times over, he could have seen another all-time great come through in the clutch.

An instant classic for a Super Bowl

While his team wasn’t present in the game despite repeated reassurances from Aaron Rodgers in the offseason, the game was an absolute barnburner. After trailing by 10 early, the Chiefs offense finally showed signs of life as Patrick Mahomes came alive after an uncharacteristic turnover.

It would pave the way for a dramatic finish. With his team behind 13-10, Christian McCaffery took over, leading a lead-securing drive en route to a 3-point lead. Back-t0-back field goals helped them secure a 19-16 lead. However, with 1:53 on the clock, it was far too much time for Mahomes and Andy Reid. A sensational drive leading to a field goal sent the game to Overtime.

The 49ers would build a steady drive, culminating with a FG to give them a 3-point lead. However, and Peace is familiar with this, having hit one of the most iconic game-winners in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals, leading to an iconic post-game press conference, with a GOAT candidate at the helm, it was impossible to count Kansas City out.

Just like he saw Kobe Bryant do it firsthand, Metta could have seen Mahomes drive a sensational overtime drive to a touchdown. An offense that looked lifeless for much of the evening came alive, with Patrick securing 69 yards without an incompletion. A game-winning touchdown secured the victory for the Chiefs, their third Super Bowl in 5 years.

Even though the New York native missed out because of hometown loyalty, it is a game worth reliving. Maybe next year, mate.
