Shaqtin’ A Fool could not have a more appropriate ambassador. While he was an all time great player, Shaquille O’Neal also happens to be one of the game’s funniest personalities. That humor is something that has rubbed off on his children as well. As the Christmas spirit takes over the world, an old Shaq quote became the source of the hilarity. This time it was his daughter, Taahirah O’Neal who wittingly let the world know about his father’s “strategy” to escape out of that hefty Christmas gift bill in a hilarious Instagram post.

The Los Angeles Lakers legend has spoken at length about his father and the impact he had on him as a human. Whether it was the discipline or bouts with reality, the elder O’Neal was essential in shaping Shaq into who he is today. One such incident would involve Christmas and the typical Santa celebration with gifts. A post from The Big Podcast on Instagram revealed that when Shaq was 8 years old, his father told him, “F**k that, there ain’t no Santa. I’m Santa. We don’t got no chimney, we in the projects.”

His daughter Taahirah would then use this Instagram post in her IG story and reveal that his NBA Champion father would use the same ideology when it came to Christmas in their household. In her Instagram story, she shared the post from The Big Podcast and wrote “Then he took that same strategy and ruined our Christmas…’There’s no chimney in Miami’ ugh.” Even though Shaq had humble beginnings and his father may not have been big on gifts, the 4-time NBA Champion once revealed how his father’s Christmas gift once changed his life.

In a Q&A with Sports Illustrated Kids in 2014, Shaq said he didn’t receive a lot of toys growing up with brothers and sisters as he was the eldest one. But his father surprised him one Christmas, Shaq revealed, “Then one day, when I thought I wasn’t getting anything for Christmas, he surprised me with a [signed] Dr. J basketball. That basketball changed my life. It inspired me to be who I am today.”

Coming back to Taahirah’s witty remark, it does serve in stark contrast to the Shaq we’ve been privy to over the festive season. It was only days ago that Taahira was left shell-shocked over his exploits at Forever 21.

Sharing a clip to her IG story again, the 27-year-old was in awe of her dad. As the two made their way into Forever 21, a few regular shoppers were in for the treat of their lives. While Diesel has often carried out random acts of generosity, he truly took the Christmas spirit to another level with this one.

The big man paid for everyone’s items at the store. Taahirah would confirm as much, accompanied by hearts and crying emojis. It was a truly special moment for father and daughter, showing the rather Santa Claus-y side of O’Neal that the family missed out on.

One take at a time

My earliest memories of a connection to basketball was through its popularity in my school. Eventually, that gave way to a genuine passion for the sport and the rest, is history. Whether it be gameplay, the tactics, the narratives, or the sheer art on display, the game speaks to me in a way few other things can.
