Sometimes, criticism can be hurtful. However, that does not make the comments any less true. The outcry was huge when Becky Hammon questioned Jalen Brunson and his ability to lead a team to the Championship. But, her point of emphasis, the rest of NBA history itself, stood. Now, she has finally found a supporter in the league, and it’s none other than Shaquille O’Neal. But, in his defense for Hammon, the 2000 NBA MVP may have turned his back on his favorite player.

The 7-footer did not see much to debate with the Los Angeles Aces’ coach’s argument. Instead, he took a more mature approach, bringing his career into the picture. “Sometimes when you listen to criticism, you have to see, there is some truth in it. She came for a fact. She is absolutely correct. Best player can’t be a small guy.” 

Moreover, the Los Angeles Lakers legend would pose the simple question that validates Hammon’s entire point. “You tell me the last time a great player was a small guy.” Immediately, cries of Stephen Curry filled the studio. That is when O’Neal would shock the world.

After incessantly pushing for Steph to be in the GOAT discussion, Shaq would go a completely different route. “He wasn’t the best player…He won 3 or 4 with him, KD [Kevin Durant].”  While the 2022 NBA Championship argument shut Shaq up about Curry, the 4x NBA Champion wouldn’t let go of the New York Knicks superstar.

“However, she didn’t say he couldn’t play. He’s a fabulous player. He’s a hell of a player, he’s a superstar in New York. But, she was making a good point. Like, when you make a good point, a lot of people get uptight. But, I agree with her,” revealed O’Neal.

But, given his argument against the greatest shooter that God ever created, it seems unlikely that the Big Aristotle will change sides in the argument.

The Hall of Famer has one of been the most appreciative media members when it comes to the legacy of the Chef. However, even he has a hard time believing Steph led his team to the Championships. That is the point Coach Hammon was trying to make about Jalen Brunson as well.

Throughout NBA history, only 2 players have led their team to a Championship that was under 6’6″ – Wardell and Isiah Thomas. While it isn’t completely impossible, it is at the very least implausible to imagine such a scenario for Brunson.
