In an interview with Forbes, he revealed how one of his mental health issues troubled him during his childhood. He struggled with ADD, (Attention Deficit Disorder) which led to difficulties in focusing, impulsivity, and learning obstacles. Almost 8.7 million adults in the US face this issue. However, back in those days, people weren’t particularly considerate of mental health. Students made fun of the athlete for his struggles. Expressing his emotions, O’Neal shared, “I wasn’t a good reader. I had ADD and was all over the place,” he said. “When I was forced to read aloud and I stuttered, people laughed at me and brought my confidence all the way down.”

However, his experience has fueled his desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others grappling with similar issues. His significant financial contribution not only reflects his empathy for those facing learning challenges but also underscores his commitment to fostering accessibility and support in education. He joined hands with portfolio company Edsoma and donated $25,00,000 to create an AI assistant to help children read.
