There you have it, folks. It’s official. While breaking records is a joyous occasion, the Detroit Pistons find themselves on the wrong side of history. After off-season moves to signal a trajectory toward the playoffs, the team has instead taken a U-turn. Now, more than a quarter of the way through the season, the team is a genuine dumpster fire. As a result, fans are chanting “sell the team” on the court. Moreover, similar sentiments are emerging from veterans and former players as well.

While not always accurate or unbiased, Chandler Parsons might be on point with his outlook on Detroit. Rather than stop at the product on display, he believes the issue is far deeper. While it begins with the players, the accountability must go beyond just them.

The players are the ones playing, right? They’re the ones that are not giving the effort. They’re the ones not making the shots. These are the players that should be the most embarrassed, right? This is 2 months of straight losing. I gotta imagine it’s a nightmare, it’s abysmal to go to the facility every single day.”

But the solutions are far greater than just basketball. Because, players, or one in particular have shown flashes of excellence. In their loss to break the record against the Brooklyn Nets, Cade Cunningham was spectacular. Yet, despite his Herculean efforts, the results were no different.

Which is why the change needs to come from higher up.

Chandler Parsons calls for a change in the Detroit Pistons front office

The first name on his list of candidates is the GM Troy Weaver. “To not make a move, the front office is also kind of mind-boggling. I think Troy Weaver, Troy Weaver’s probably a good guy, he’s gotta go. You can’t assemble this team and lose 27 straight games.”

To him, head coach Monty Williams, with his record-breaking extension, is off-limits for that very reason. “That contract that he got. You can’t get rid of him.” His issues would once again circle back to the front office. “But when you look at the construction of this team, it just doesn’t make sense.”

Whether it be the lack of shooters or the lack of true difference-makers outside of Cade, the entire situation is a mess. “It’s really bad and everybody should be up for grabs… But when you have a streak like this, it falls on everybody. Everybody has to take accountability, everybody has to change.”

To find that fresh start after the current “dumpster fire,” Parsons’ first target would be the GM. “Monty Williams didn’t put this team together, he just took the bag they gave him. Troy Weaver’s gotta go.”

One take at a time

My earliest memories of a connection to basketball was through its popularity in my school. Eventually, that gave way to a genuine passion for the sport and the rest, is history. Whether it be gameplay, the tactics, the narratives, or the sheer art on display, the game speaks to me in a way few other things can.
