One of the toughest jobs in basketball is the role of a point guard. Whether it be split-second decision-making or acting as a pseudo-coach, the role requires tremendous basketball IQ. However, as the primary decision maker for their team, the player can catch some flack due to their decisions. But, it becomes a bigger problem when that scrutiny comes from within the locker room. Due to a simple comment by Kenny “The Jet” Smith, both Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley broke into an argument.

Looking at the two bickering, Kenny could only reveal, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is an NBA locker room if you’re an NBA point guard.”?

Who would you pass it to? Shaquille O’Neal or Charles Barkley?

The TNT foursome were in a heavy discussion about the complexity of the point guard position. Due to players like Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving changing the mold, more “traditional” point guards are a rarity in the NBA. Whether it be Chris Paul or Tyrese Haliburton, floor generals are rarer in number today.

For all the flowers to Tyrese Maxey about his explosion, that aspect of his game still needs work. While he’s filling the shoes of James Harden quite well, there is still work to be done on the playmaking side of things. Because it is a tough task to understand the role properly. Speaking on it, Kenny made one tiny comment that set the two legends off.

“Learn how to say no. Let’s say you’re on a great team with Charles Barkley and Shaq. Let’s say you’re on a 3-on-2 fastbreak. You throw it to Shaq and say ‘No’ to Charles.” But, Chuck wasn’t taking that comment lightly. ”

You pass the ball to Shaq instead of me?”?That rebuttal, however, was part of?The Jet’s?plans. “See, this is what I mean…You don’t want this in a locker room.”

As Shaq tried to interrupt, Barkley fired angry comments towards the Los Angeles Lakers legend. “Let him finish fool. You can’t dribble.”?That escalation led Kenny to compare the scenes in the studio to those in the locker room. Further, the two then went anecdotal about the best point guards they were on the court with.

While the day did begin rather funnily with the crew having fun at the Miami Heat legend’s expense, it eventually found its way back to coherence.

Despite his wildly successful run with the Phoenix Suns, it was a teammate from his time with the Philadelphia 76ers that got Charles’ distinction for best point guard. “I thought that Maurice Cheeks was the perfect point guard. Kevin Johnson was more of a scorer, he was a great player. But, to piggyback off of Kenny’s point. You need to know when not to get the ball to guys and when to get the ball to guys.”
