Despite a historic night honoring his career and legacy, Shawn Marion remains in search of validation. Due to constantly being written off as the man with an unorthodox jumper, other aspects of his game did not receive equal attention. But Marion has made it a mission to remind folks of his talent on the court and his similarity to Kevin Durant off of it.

After the infamous Twitter rant last year, the former Phoenix Sun was back at it. This time around, the press conference became his canvas to paint his latest story of unfairness. While his earlier rants were more general in terms of legacy, this was a specific call out for Shawn’s defensive prowess. What makes the call-out more notable is that came from his own son.

The lack of hardware to commemorate that defensive talent is what stuck Shawn in his grill. Letting out his frustrations, the 2011 NBA champion said the lack of All-Defensive selections for him was “disgusting.”

I would be averaging 5-6 steals a game. Easily. The way they throwing that ball away right now? Pickings.” However, the star of the show became the Dallas Mavericks veteran’s son. Claiming “that’s a lie”, he put the estimate to around 2 a game.

His reasoning was simple. “You’re too old.” The comment drew a shocked expression from the Ring of Honor awardee as the entire room burst into laughter. When Shawn tried to make a case for his age when he was playing, the youngster was still on a roll. “Nah, you still s**k.”

During his career, the 4-time All-Star was always a trusty defender. Whether it was handling smaller or bigger wings, Marion could do a handy job with either end of the spectrum. But, what made him special on defense was his anticipation making him a menace on that end.

Twitter Rants and Ring of Honors: The Shawn Marion Story

Last year, Shawn Marion would go on an infamous Twitter rant calling out fans for stereotyping him for his unique jumper only. As a result, other aspects of his game were largely marginalized, much to the chagrin of Marion.

During the rant, he would point to his efficiency as a shooter and the disregard for other skills that he brought to the table. All in all, his greatness hasn’t been taken into consideration by the NBA fans at large.

But, the 45-year-old got some measure of validation with the Suns announcing a Ring of Honor ceremony for him.
