Living up to legendary parents can be a tough task for any child. Whether it be due to the accomplishments or the respect that comes along with it, children can have a hard time catching up. But, the comparisons make the entire ordeal much worse. Not just against your own father, but the children of other superstars. Case in point: To humiliate Tom Brady’s son, an American rapper went after the third born of Shaquille O’Neal.

Why are more children not like their dads?

Speaking on ‘Come and Talk 2 Me‘, Mason Durell Betha explained his problem. The conversation came about as a result of Jack Brady wanting to play Tight End instead of his father’s Quarterback position. Hence, the 48-year-old rapper ‘Ma$e’ laid into him.

When I think about kids today it’s amazing how they want to be everybody but their dad. I think it’s a curse when people don’t want to be like their dad.”?Then the Los Angeles Lakers legend’s family came into the conversation.

I watched that with Shaquille O’Neal’s son. He wanted to be like Kobe…It’s a real curse to not try to be like your dad especially when your dad is great.”

His points do hold some credence, though. In fact, Shareef O’Neal isn’t the only NBA legend’s son this applies to.

Earlier in the year, Marcus Jordan made The Trophy Room his focus instead of going into basketball. However, Maurice’s argument does seem to be too specific.

At the end of the day, the question really turns to, whether or not the individual likes what he’s doing and if they’re good at it. For example, Jack Brady is blossoming into a strong Tight End candidate. So, making a shift in positions would be fuel to an unnecessary fire.

Similarly, the case of Shaquille O’Neal is a complex yet easy one.

At the same time, Taahirah chose to not focus on basketball. Instead, she did her degree in sociology and a minor in politics with African American studies.

Similarly, Shareef is making strides in the NBA G-League. Shaqir and Me’Arah are also making strides as basketball stars at the collegiate level. Amirah has already ascended past the college level.

All this to say, even though they haven’t explicitly taken after their legendary father, all 6 of them have found success, albeit at different levels. So, to consider any of them following a “curse” is a bit of a stretch. What do you think about Ma$e’s comments?
