NBA 2K21 Cover Star Damian Lillard Reveals His Issues With the Game

NBA 2K21 released on September 4 to a tepid reaction. While fans have appreciated the changes to multiplayer modes like MyTeam and the neighborhood, single-player modes were neglected. MyLeague and MyGM continue to remain virtually unchanged. The game feels like just a cosmetic upgrade from NBA 2K20, with small changes.
While the game is similar, there is one major tweak. Fans have long complained about the lack of a skill gap in the game for a long time. The simulation-style made the game feel like a combination of shot odds. To fix this, 2K changed the shot meter. The new shot meter isn’t as easy to use, as players not only have to time their shots but also give it direction. The change was lambasted during the demo, but it doesn’t seem like it was patched out.

The shot meter has sparked up a storm in the 2K community. While many are extremely upset at how hard it has become to shoot, others have found it a welcome change. Players that have gotten sick of constantly random odds of shots dropping will enjoy the extra bit of control over their shot with the new shooting system. However, this has made the game almost impossible for casual players who won’t bother learning how to shoot for just occasional games here and there.

Even Ronnie2K addressed the concerns with the shot meter and seemed to indicate that the meter will stay the same. He seemingly stood by the decision and confirmed that it was an addition to increase the skill gap at the more competitive level.
There was no hot fix. Nothing to see here. Skill gap remains. Rejoice.

Even though the shooting has been criticized, people have bought the game in droves. 2K servers were heavy on day one, but the should normalize through the week. Offline players can just stick to playing NBA 2K20, as there is nothing new that the game offers for them. However, the new Neighbourhood and MyTeam systems have incentivized online players to hop on the new game, even though the real upgrades will come with the next-gen.
