The Indiana Pacers sacked head coach Nate McMillan in the wake of being swept by the Miami Heat in playoffs. McMillan guided the team to NBA postseasons for all four seasons as a Head Coach. But he couldn’t guide the team past the first round in any of the four seasons. In fact, he went 3-16 in the playoffs!

Coach McMillan entered the series without his all-star forward Damontis Sabonis, who is still recovering from a foot injury. Apart from him, Bubble breakout, T.J. Warren struggled against Jimmy Butler the whole series.

Indiana Pacers released a statement regarding the firing of coach McMillan, The statement read:

“On behalf of the Simon family and the Pacers organization, I’d like to thank Nate for his years with the team,” said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard.

“This was a very hard decision for us to make; but we feel it’s in the best interest of the organization to move in a different direction. Nate and I have been through the good times and the bad times; and it was an honor to work with him for those 11 years (in Indiana and Portland).”

Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade was furious with Pacers’ decision to let go of their head coach. He said, “Right because he was suppose to beat a healthy Heat team without his 2 AllStars being fully healthy for the last two years.” Wade said.

What’s next for the Indiana Pacers?

The situation with the Indiana Pacers is a bit complicated as of now. They are neither a top contender for the NBA championship nor they are at the bottom of the barrel. They are stuck in mediocrity. But a new head coach might bring a new viewpoint to the team.

Nate McMillan was not a poor coach by any means; he had a record of 183-136 during his time with the Pacers. However, a coach like Mike D’Antoni might fit best with the current Pacers team. He believes in offense over defense, and that is clearly reflected in his current team, the Houston Rockets.

Mike’s contract is expiring at the end of the season and according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, he is at the top of the target list for the Pacers.
