On the Road to National Championship, Kim Mulkey Reflects on LSU’s Upcoming Elimination Re-Match Against Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gameocks

The stage is set for the biggest rematch in this year’s NCAA women’s division. Kim Mulkey and her roaring Tigers will face Dawn Staley’s No. 1 seeded Gamecocks in the 2024 SEC tournament Finals. Both teams have been exceptional in their respective conference campaigns. In the end, it will come down to who gets the better of the other. With multiple SEC honors in LSU Tigers’ bag and an undefeated streak on Gamecocks’ side, tonight’s game is all about ferocity, fire, and fortitude clashing at once.

The fans are still reeling from the entire drama that happened in the semi-final matchup for both teams. Still, the ballers are already preparing to give their best performances. But before that, LSU’s head coach warms the plot a little. After securing an impressive victory against Mississippi, Kim Mulkey interacted with the media and expressed her thoughts before the much-anticipated game.

She said, “This is my third year at LSU and this is the first championship in the conference tournament that we’ve played in. That’s big. That was a goal of ours. When you get to the conference tournament, get to that championship game.” 

Talking about the finalists, Mulkey said, “I think you’re gonna see two teams that are tired. They had to play hard to win today, we had to play hard. And it may not be a pretty game who knows?”

Commenting on the strong contenders squaring off in the Finale, she said, “It is two of the most recognizable teams in the country. Quite honestly, if I remember, the National championships come through the SEC. So maybe, you’re watching one of us win a National Championship. Again, it would be fun to keep it in the SEC.”

Undeniably, both the teams did have an intense week building up to the Finals. LSU had a rather comfortable win against the Rebels after destroying Auburn in the quarterfinals. At the same time, Kamilla Cardoso’s miraculous three-pointer rescued the Gamecocks in their buzzer-beater clash against the Lady Vols. But shall we talk about the game now?

Building up for the big day

South Carolina is moving forward in the tournament boasting their flawless 31-0 streak right now. On the other hand, Angel Reese & Co. who have recently enhanced their defense comes in with a strong 28-4 record as well. In their last matchup on 25 January 2024, Gamecocks crushed the floor with a gripping 76-70 win.
