Former Duke University head coach Mike Krzyzewski never fails to speak his mind. Apart from an illustrious career spanning over four decades, Coach K is known for his brutally honest interviews, where he doesn’t mince his words. Krzyzewski recently gave an interview where he discussed topics ranging from his successor Jon Scheyer to his life after retirement. Let us have a look at what he had to say that made the fans wear their thinking caps.
For the unversed, Mike was the former head coach for Duke University who led the Blue Devils to 5 NCAA titles only second to UCLA’s John Wooden. He also led the USA men’s basketball team to gold medals during the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics.

Coach compared the administrative processes at the college basketball level with that of the NBA, and opined how different they are. He also opined on what could benefit the college basketball leagues. “The Big 12 is trying to do their thing better than the SEC and the ACC. And so there is no solidarity and so I don’t know, I am glad I am advising for the NBA. I can get better advice I think for the NBA. They are organized… They have one of the great leaders. They have structure… And people who want to make money,” stated Krzyzewski.

For the unversed, the Big 12 is a former group of 12, now 10, universities that compete in the NCAA Division 1 League. The basketball community at the college level has more similar conferences, namely the ACC, Pac-12, Big East, and SEC. These operate individually and have no camaraderie at any level. The teams participating in NCAA have teams chosen from 32 Division 1 conferences.
As per Sports Illustrated, Mike Krzyzewski had previously also been vocal about the lack of organization, and structure at the college level despite college basketball generating significant revenue for the NCAA.
According to another article by Sports Illustrated, the conferences are governed by commissions who previously enjoyed a stable job but have now gone through multiple changes in their role. The recent example could be attributed to six commission changes since 2019 including Bob Bowlsby, Craig Thompson, Jim Delany, Karl Benson, and John Swofford

Meanwhile, Coach K also reflected on his successor at Duke’s University Jon Scheyer. Scheyer was a player and then also worked as an assistant coach under Krzyzewski. Mike Krzyzewski also divulged some funny anecdotes from Scheyer’s life and extended his support to the former Duke University player. Meanwhile, in the recent developments, Mike came out of retirement and will be plying his trade as an advisor to the NBA. The Hall Of Famer is the new advisor to the NBA’s operations.
