Born on October 20, 2003, in Miami, Florida, Ta’Niya Latson was raised in a household defined by the dual influence of her parents, Derek and Daneeka Latson. Her father’s military career instilled a foundation of discipline and resilience, while her mother served as her steadfast emotional anchor. Growing up with six siblings amidst constant relocation, Ta’Niya sharpened her competitive edge by playing alongside her father and challenging older boys in neighborhood pick-up games.

Despite a life of transient zip codes, spanning the Great Plains, the palm-fringed islands of Hawaii, the hills of Georgia, and the shores of Florida, the basketball court remained her only constant. Whether on polished hardwood or rugged blacktop, the game provided a sense of belonging that geography could not. Though her family eventually settled in Missouri, the frequent moves of her youth made forming lasting connections a challenge.

“I was practically raised there,” she says of Missouri, yet she admits that the cycle of packing up left her with a guarded social life. “Even now, my circle is so small because I’m so used to leaving. My siblings have always been my best friends.” This uniquely American upbringing, traversing from Texas to Florida, ultimately forged the independent and focused athlete she is today.

As a Black American, Ta’Niya Latson credits her upbringing in a disciplined, heritage-focused family for her grounded worldview. Her transient childhood allowed her to embrace diverse cultural influences from Hawaii to Georgia, though her faith and family remained her constant anchors. Her basketball journey began informally in the backyard with her siblings and father, but by the fourth grade, her competitive drive took hold.

After discovering a local co-ed church league, Ta’Niya sought her mother’s blessing to play competitively. With her parents’ full support, she began competing against both boys and girls, quickly realizing a talent that would define her future: she was exceptional at the game. Throughout her rise to stardom, Latson has remained deeply spiritual, frequently noting that she is sustained by a higher power and maintaining a remarkably humble perspective on her success.

Which high school did Ta’niya Latson go to? 

Due to her father’s military career, Ta’Niya Latson’s high school years were marked by frequent relocations and athletic excellence across multiple states. She began her journey in Florida, attending Miami Country Day School and Charles W. Flanagan High School as a freshman before moving to Georgia. At Westlake High School in Atlanta, she reunited with current teammate Raven Johnson, together leading the team to three 6A state titles and a GEICO National Championship in 2021.

For her senior season, Latson returned to Florida to play for American Heritage School, where she cemented her legacy as a standout five-star recruit. She capped off her high school career by earning Florida Miss Basketball honors and leading her team to a Class 5A state title. These experiences of settling into new environments, combined with the disciplined structure of her household, were instrumental in shaping the resilient character and elite competitive edge she displays today with the South Carolina Gamecocks.
