The 2024 March Madness run will live long in the memory of the Alabama Crimson Tide and head coach Nate Oats. While the Crimson Chaos will not enter the Championship game, their senior Mark Sears will be a name that will echo through the arena walls. Although he has ensured that his skills and talents on the floor come to fruition, his mother is also not relaxing. In fact, the mother-son duo has found a ritual of their own that may or may not be affecting the game Sears plays on the court.

Mark Sears was born to Chad and Lameka Sears in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Chad has a master’s degree in elementary education and was previously in the Florence City Schools system. In 2019, he became a second-grade teacher. On the other hand, Lameka is a housewife and a passionate supporter of her son’s basketball prowess. Mark also has a sister named Makenzie.

As a high schooler at Muscle Shoals, Mark wrote down a wish and taped it to his bedroom wall. The wish aimed for him to represent an SEC school someday and win a National Championship. He led MSHS to the Class 6A Northwest Regional championship in 2019 and to the semifinals the next year. However, he then transferred to the Hargrave Military Academy, where he led the team to the Final Four of Prep National Championship as a senior. After leading the school with a 37-4 record, he committed to play with the Ohio Bobcats.

With the Bobcats, Mark collected the 2021 MAC All-Freshman Team and the 2022 First-team All-MAC. To unlock his potential further, the junior entered the transfer portal and finally chose Alabama over other invites. The rest is history as today he is the primary reason why the Crimson Tide are in their very first Final Four round. So how did his mother impact his games?

Mark Sears and Lameka’s superstitious ritual

The 22-year-old is today one of the most efficient guards in the men’s league and the team reached the NCAA Championship semifinals for the first time in school history. Hence, looks like Lameka’s tricks are giving results. While it may have just found the eyes of the nation now, Lameka has been mimicking his son’s free throws ever since he was in high school. The video first came to light in their opening-round game against the No. 13 seed Charleston.

She elevated the act tonight against the reigning champions UConn. She mimicked dribbling and then shooting as Mark came to the free-throw line with a small prop ball in her hand. The Crimson Tide may have lost today but Mark came out a hero. Against the Huskies, he grabbed 24 points and 5 rebounds. He also had 3 assists to the team total. On another note, fans added a new nickname for him such as Jalen Brunson’s clone.
