It has been ages since North Carolina Tar Heels fans got to taste what peace feels like. Since joining the ACC in 1953, the Tar Heels have won five conference championships. However, four decades have passed since they won one in 1980. Their latest dark chapter came with Mack Brown, who failed to leave a mark with a 6-6 season. Finally, the 8x Super Bowl-winning Bill Belichick made them hopeful again with his head coaching intentions at UNC. But here too, Belichick’s personal life is giving rise to a cloud of doubts about his future in UNC. So, who is next? Turns out there was someone preferred before Belichick came into the picture…
Lets begin from the start. 2019-2024 marked Brown’s second chapter in the Tar Heels. He first coached the program from 1988-1997 before he left for the University of Texas. In Austin, he won a national championship. This might have given the Tar Heels some FOMO. So, Brown returned to Chapel Hill in November 2018 only to be terminated, exactly six years later. The reason? Under him, the Tar Heels’ defense continuously stuttered, and there came some big turndown moments. For example, their big 70-50 loss to James Madison. After getting rid of Brown, North Carolina began its search for the next candidate. That’s when Georgia Bulldogs co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann‘s name came up for the head coaching role.

Schumann has created a bright image of himself in the college football landscape. He is a young, energetic, and bright defensive coach who has been the brain behind numerous national championship-winning defenses. Plus, his USP in taking control of the recruiting role came off as a big bonus. Schumann has been an elite recruiter with several years of experience. With this, he had already taken Kirby Smart into his confidence, as the Georgia HC once said: “He has been a great reason in my growth, on and off the field.” But last time, Belichick landed the role. However, now that North Carolina does not sound too confident about proceeding with Belichick, thanks to his sweetheart Jordon Hudson’s interference, Schumann’s name is popping up.
On the May 10 episode of That SEC Football podcast, Georgia insider Rusty Mansell shared an interesting scoop. “I think Glenn Schumann is being very picky about jobs. I was interested if he got that North Carolina job. From everything I heard on the outside, they reached out to him and said, ‘Are you interested?’ And he said, ‘Certainly would like to. Maybe talk.’”
A ‘maybe’? Now that’s no surprise. His pickiness about jobs has been inherited from two of his mentors and peers, Smart and Dan Lanning. Mansell came up with Schumann’s background for a better understanding of his nature. “He was a student. Didn’t play college football. He was a student assistant at Alabama, he got promoted to Kirby Smart’s room. So, he was with Kirby Smart every day, he watched Kirby make those decisions.”
As we all must be aware, Smart, too, had turned down various head coaching offers that also included Power Four jobs. While Schumann keeps North Carolina on their toes, the program’s woes continue. Thanks to Belichick.

Analyst reveals North Carolina camp’s deep concerns with Bill Belichick
Less than six months into his first-ever college football stint, Belichick has started getting the ‘firing’ verdict. Is the program doubting the former New England Patriots’ head coach’s coaching talents?
Not at all. Maybe it’s Belichick’s personal life that is dragging down the head coach. As per On3’s report, a close source said that the Hudson situation was “growing sense this could become a problem.” Belichick’s sweetheart isn’t exactly welcome at the school’s football facility. But why so?
Well, the reasons are plenty. She appearing in a full influencer garb at the Tar Heels’ spring game did not sit well with many. However, the biggest turn down came with Hudson interrupting Belichick’s CBS interview multiple times. Later on, the debut head coach set out a clear instruction to have Hudson’s name CCed in every work email that Belichick receives. While North Carolina is yet to arrive at a decision, Belichick’s family is already hinting at tough times ahead.

In his podcast, Pablo S. Torre shared some inside scoop. “Bill Belichick’s family is extraordinarily concerned about what has transpired. One Belichick family source told me, quote, ‘There is deep worry for how detrimental Jordon can be for not just North Carolina, but Bill’s legacy, reputation, everything he has built and worked for over decades.’” So, do the Tar Heels give Schumann a second thought, or will they take the Belichick bait?
