The Michigan Wolverines fans must be thinking, ‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!’ Ever since 2024, it turns out that they have signed up for an unlimited subscription to woes. First, the sign-stealing drama, followed by Jim Harbaugh’s exit. While they thought that if not the Natty, their debut head coach, Sherrone Moore, would confirm a place in the playoffs, they got their bubbles popped. This year started with transfer portal losses, followed by Moore facing two suspensions this season. While the Wolverines thought that their quota of yearly woes is full, here came some more blows. Michigan President Santa Ono left Ann Arbor. Since then, the fans must be looking for their answer to, ‘WHY?’ That’s when Joel Klatt comes up with an interesting theory.

Well, it’s not the right time for the Wolverines to undergo major changes in their administration. But poor Moore and co.! Things aren’t in their control anymore. Ono announced his intention on May 4 to step down as the University of Michigan president to take the same job in Florida. He also explained his choice in a letter on May 8, headlining, “Why I Chose University of Florida.”

Ono wrote, “The University of Florida is already one of the nation’s premier public universities. But it has the potential to be the very best. That belief—in UF’s momentum, its mission and its future—is what led me to pursue the extraordinary opportunity of the UF presidency.” However, having served for a little less than three years in Moore’s program calls for some in-depth discussion.

On The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast on May 12, the host has got that covered, calling the concurrence of events “interesting timing.” But what’s tingling Klatt from inside? Maybe, the analyst feels that Moore’s Michigan is the more prestigious job as a school president. So, there could be other reasons besides the prestige of the job to make that move. “This is going to sound disparaging. It’s not meant to be disparaging. I think it’s probably just a compliment to the University of Michigan, but when we think about the University of Michigan as a research school, as an academic school, just the prestige of the University of Michigan. As they like to put it, the leaders of the West.”

Klatt then brought Florida into the picture to uplift Moore’s program a little more. “That’s a great school. Great school. It’s not the University of Michigan.” The analyst then addressed the elephant in the room. “Now, maybe he’s just going down for sunshine and no taxes. I don’t know. There’s plenty of those in our country, but I’m not sure if that’s totally this case.” Plus, Michigan is now trying to keep its head above the water to get Moore out of suspension. That’s when Klatt arrived at a conclusion.

“So, something is coming. And it’s likely very large and could be even financial. So, the Michigan saga is going to be with us for at least a few more months.” Going by Klatt’s analysis, Ono left a prestigious program to run after fattening his pockets. But ‘prestige’ is something that Michigan is struggling with.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Sherrone Moore's suspension just the tip of the iceberg for Michigan's ongoing troubles?

Have an interesting take?

Is the two-game suspension just the beginning for Sherrone Moore’s woes?

On October 19, 2023, it was reported that Michigan was under investigation for alleged sign-stealing. The main controversy revolved around staffer Connor Stalions, who was accused of attending games featuring Michigan’s future opponents. And guess what? Nobody was spared. Earlier, it was Harbaugh who had to go through the dark path called suspension. The Big Ten suspended Moore’s predecessor for three games late in the 2023 season after conducting its investigation.

Ultimately, Harbaugh had to pack his bags and fly off to the NFL and not return to CFB. Now, what about Moore? The Michigan head coach is accused of deleting 52 text messages with Stalions around the time of the initial investigation, which is against NCAA rules. So, this season, in two games, he will have to spend time on the sidelines. Moore will miss Michigan’s Week 3 game against Central Michigan and its Week 4 Big Ten opener against Nebraska. Unfortunately, this will not be enough for Moore to come out clean.

That’s when analyst Sam Webb drew a bleak picture. He dropped a bomb for the Wolverines fans: “It’s not final…It may not be two games.” Then what’s next coming up on Sherrone Moore’s plate? This was doubled down by other analyst NevadaBuck. He said, “If Sherrone Moore gets a show cause, I don’t know exactly what the rules but Coach Meyer is under the impression, a lot of people are under the impression, that if you have a show cause, you can’t coach in college.” Sherrone Moore was hired to put out the fire—now he’s the one feeling the heat.
