The 6x Super Bowl winner, Bill Belichick, might be on a warm seat. True to his word, he’s squashed all NFL comeback chatter. But staying loyal to the college grind usually nets a shiny contract. A North Carolina journalist is not betting the farm on fortune favoring Belichick in Chapel Hill.

On November 18, Brian Murphy tweeted, “Maybe I was the only one curious, but no changes to UNC football coach Bill Belichick’s contract re: his no NFL jobs statement. (Often those “I’m staying” announcements bring some new deal.)” Just like the head coaching carousel in college, it has spread in the NFL, too. That’s what made Belichick’s name catch the buzz.
The Tar Heels head coach’s name surfaced in connection with the New York Giants job after Brian Daboll’s firing. But even then, Belichick seemed to be loyal to his one-year-old home. “Despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies. Since arriving in Chapel Hill, my commitment to the UNC Football program has not waivered,” Belichick made himself clear in a statement.

Often, when coaches make these “I’m staying” announcements, it coincides with a new contract or bonus clause. That comes from the fear of losing head coaches to poaching. North Carolina’s Tar Heels signed a five-year, $10 million-per-year deal in 2024 with Belichick. At a time when contract extensions have hit a trend, Belichick comes off as the odd one out.
Texas A&M secured Mike Elko for six years at $11 million annually through 2031, Indiana kept Curt Cignetti in the fold, and Nebraska extended Matt Rhule for two more seasons. Turns out that the Tar Heels still can’t count on Belichick in the long run. Forget extensions, a donor asked Bill to hang up his head coaching boots.

The founder of Barstool Sports, the $250 million Michigan Wolverines Booster, Dave Portnoy, did not mince his words. On X, he had his fingers pointed at Belichick. “Belichick needs to retire. This is disgusting. I’m not even sure he knows the score or where he is,” wrote Portnoy. There are a couple of reasons behind the Tar Heels’ penny pinching.
Belichick’s scoring chances went up in flames at Wake Forest. Rece Verhoff had six FG tries, two blocked, one a 57-yarder to close the half and set a program record. But it wasn’t enough. The defeat snapped a four-game win streak against Wake, and Belichick’s offense stalled under 300 yards with zero TDs for the first time this season. Under Belichick, the Tar Heels tasted their first loss to Wake since 2019. Amid this rough patch, the head coach made sure to show support to his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

Other than steering the Tar Heels to a 4-6 overall record, Belichick has been dragged through the mud for his personal life. During UNC’s 2-2 bye week, Belichick took off to Nantucket with his girlfriend. A romantic escape while the program teetered? Naturally, it turned heads. After all, legends like Nick Saban and even current coaches like Dan Lanning have long used bye weeks to hit the recruiting trail hard.
Weeks later, the North Carolina Tar Heels’ condition has only worsened. However, Belichick had Hudson by his side through one of his darkest chapters in his career. Looks like it’s not over for Hudson. The Miss Maine second runner-up went back to her passion, cheerleading. Belichick’s ladylove has been on a coed adult cheer squad, and the head coach was recently spotted cheering her on during game week.

After all, lately, she happened to be focused squarely on Bill Belichick and the North Carolina program. A fan snapped a photo of Belichick at the competition, later shared on X, showing the Tar Heels coach hanging in the corner while Hudson and her teammates took the mat. “I didn’t have 73 yo Bill Belichick showing up at a cheer competition to watch his 24 yo gf perform on my 2025 bingo card, but here we are,” the user wrote on X. A 6x Super Bowl champ stumbling in college football? That one wasn’t on the 2025 forecast either.
