The San Francisco 49ers are off to a solid 4-1 start, with both Mac Jones and Brock Purdy taking snaps through the first five weeks. But as the season moves deeper, the injury bug is starting to take its toll. Their 26-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football was no different. The team’s still feeling the effects of players getting hurt.

In the process of their Week 5 win, the Niners lost defensive lineman Kalia Davis to a hand injury. Fast forward to now, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added another layer to Davis’ injury status. The analyst reported that the DL is undergoing surgery today to repair his broken hand, per sources. On top of that, he could also miss around a couple of games.
Ahead of the game, the Niners were already without George Kittle (short-term IR), Nick Bosa (out of the season), Purdy, Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, you name it. And now, the 27-year-old defensive tackle went down with a hand injury in the second quarter of the game, and on the day he turned 27.

After leaving the field, the Niners announced that Davis was questionable to return for the rest of the game. While the severity of his injury at that time was unknown, as Rapoport reported, Davis will now go under the knife to repair his broken hand. Of course, losing Davis to an injury stings after this great start.

But considering the 49ers’ offensive as well as defensive players are already marred with injuries, at least Davis’ issue isn’t season-ending. Along with Davis, versatile defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos also exited the game with a hamstring injury against the Rams at SoFi Stadium. With Week 6 coming up, the 49ers are looking to bounce back. And here’s the latest on their players’ injury statuses.
Mac Jones and Brock Purdy are both facing injuries
Kyle Shanahan couldn’t stop raving about Mac Jones: “He played his a-s off man. He was unbelievable in the first half. He got banged up there in the second half and battled through it.”
The HC added: “He protected the ball and, going against that defense and throwing the ball that many times, not having a turnover and protecting the ball like he did, I can’t say enough good things about Mac.”
The backup QB in Brock Purdy’s absence completed 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. And yes, he battled throughout the game with a depleted WR corps and a banged-up knee. After the game, Shanahan admitted that Jones did face some knee issues after the Rams’ defensive end, Byron Young, landed on him.

Fast forward, and injury analyst Deepak Chona added another layer to Jones’ injury status. Chona reported that Jones was heavily limping but leaning toward playing in Week 6. On top of that, the injury analyst also shared an update on the 49ers’ starting QB, Purdy. Per Chona, Purdy re-aggravated turf toe. While there’s still optimism of his early return, Purdy could sit out in Week 6.
While Chona also believes that Kittle and Pearsall could return for Week 6, sure. But we’ll see how Jones leads the 49ers next week against the struggling Baltimore Ravens.
