Picture this: the 49ers‘ front office has been on a mission this offseason, handing out contract extensions like Oprah giving away cars. George Kittle just secured a massive four-year, $76.4 million deal, reclaiming his spot as the NFL’s highest-paid tight end. They also re-signed fullback Kyle Juszczyk and brought in tight end Luke Farrell on a three-year contract. Even backup quarterback Mac Jones inked a two-year deal.
Let’s just say it’s been a whirlwind of activity, with the team locking down key players left and right. Yet, amidst all this hustle, there’s a notable silence surrounding one player. Yup, we’re talking about Brock Purdy. The guy who completed 722-of-1,069 passes for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns, 27 interceptions, and a 104.9 passer rating across three seasons in San Francisco. But contract extension? Not even close.
So, word is Purdy’s camp is aiming high—like $60 million per year kind of high. But most analysts are thinking it’ll land somewhere closer to $50 mil annually. The thing is, though, right now it’s not even about how much he’s gonna get. Nope. The real question everyone’s stuck on is: when is that extension finally happening? Because the clock’s ticking, and it’s way too quiet.

That’s where the 49ers’ publisher for Sports Illustrated, Grant Cohn, comes in. On Monday, Cohn took to his official ‘X’ handle and predicted the timeline of Purdy’s contract extension. “I predict the 49ers will announce Brock Purdy’s extension in the next seven days,” he wrote. That’s something worth noting. It’s been just a week since the 49ers signed Kittle on a $76.4 million deal.

That means Purdy’s deal is surely going to impact their salary cap. But let’s call it what it is. The 49ers were on full roster reset mood to free up salary cap space for Purdy’s contract. And as per analyst David Lombardi, the Niners still have $50 million in cap space despite Kittle’s contract extension. But if you’re thinking that Purdy’s deal will be straightforward $50M or $60M per year—not exactly.
In fact, the Niners will probably take some clever money moves—like low initial hits, spreading out bonuses over time, and holding most of big money toward the latter years. Just like Kittle’s contract extension. Prior to his $74.6M deal, Kittle was originally going to count $22 million against the cap. Post-extension? It’s dropped down to $14 million. More flexibility. And the Niners might do something similar with Brock Purdy as well. Whether in the next seven days or in the next few weeks, months, whatever.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Purdy worth $50 million a year, or are the 49ers overestimating his value?
Have an interesting take?
$50 million per year deal for Brock Purdy or nah?
By now, a couple of things seem certain for the 49ers. First, they haven’t offered a contract extension to Brock Purdy. And second, the QB’s camp is looking for a $50 million per year deal. Sure, the rumor mill was buzzing earlier that Purdy was asking for over $60 million deal that will set a new benchmark for QBs in the NFL, but let’s be real—it still feels like a long shot right now.
And that’s where The Athletic’s Dianna Russini comes in with her prediction for Purdy’s contract extension. “I think $50 million is the floor,” Russini said on her podcast. “I think it probably finishes at $52 million, maybe $53 million.” See, at this point, Purdy and his agent would surely want that number. The reason? Well, if the Niners are really signing Purdy on a $50 million deal, the QB and his agent will look at Tua Tagovailoa. Why?

The Dolphins‘ QB is currently making $53.1 million per season as per his four-year $212.4 million contract. And it’s unlikely Purdy will get less money than the Dolphins’ QB. To make it more obvious, Mike Jones of The Athletic also chimed in and revealed that it’s just a matter of time until Brock Purdy gets his contract extension. “Purdy is expected to wind up with a contract that will pay him around $50 million per season and places him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league…. It now seems like a matter of when, not if, Purdy gets paid,” Jones wrote.
So, the timeline for Purdy’s extension is still unclear. Some say he’ll get his deal within a week, while others are predicting that it’s just a matter of time before the Niners agree for a deal. But looks like the $50M deal is certainly on the cards.
