A father-son duo in the same team is an incredibly glorious and rare achievement that every sporting community can celebrate. In its 123-year-long history, the NFL has seen various unique records and incidents. But a father-son duo on the same team falls on the rarest of its rarest occurrences. But it seems like we are standing at one such juncture after the turn of an entire century.

Jaguars‘ head coach Doug Pederson becomes a part of the history books on MNF, where his son Josh Pederson is going to make his NFL debut. Although the pair had the opportunity to make it happen back in August, the HC, being a savage dad and determined coach decided not to. But Josh has proved that he doesn’t need his father’s favor to succeed in the league. And with that, no one could be more proud than Doug Pederson himself.

For the first time since 1921, a father and son will be taking the grandest stage of Gridiron in the same colors. In MNF, on December 4, the AFC South leaders are set to place the HC’s son on the roster against the Bengals. And the moment will mark a 100-year-old reoccurrence of a similar incident that took place in 1921. The HC could have placed his son on the active squad in August but decided to cut him off for the sake of the best-quality roster. After being cleared of waives, Josh signed to the practice team the same month where his performances caught his father’s eyes. Now he is finally back at the match squad after being recently promoted by the team.

The last time something similar happened was over a century ago. On September 25, 1921, roughly one year after the NFL’s establishment, the Colombus Panhandles took on the Arkon Pros. The Columbus side consisted of a father-son pair in Ted and Charles Nesser, playing as teammates. The family altogether was greatly associated with Gridiron with 6 brothers playing for the team. This was the first and only time in the 20th century one such incident was recorded in the NFL.

The NFL might be celebrating the special occasion after a century. It is also exactly not the same scenario of both generations playing as teammates, but rather as coaches and players. But college football’s highest division, the NCAA has one prominent father-son duo already present in one of the teams for some time now, who also happens to be a coach-player combo just like in the NFL. Could you guess who the famous pair are?

Coach Prime is the NCAA’s celebrated Josh Pederson

It’s none other than the Colorado Buffaloes‘ head coach Deion Sanders and his 21-year-old son Shedeur Sanders, who are arguably the most famous NCAA side right now. The Buffaloes became part of history when Sanders took up the college job exactly a year ago, making Coach Prime a first-timer in that position in college football history.

While the Buffaloes aren’t having a season to remember with 4-8 despite Sanders’ motivating words, the Jaguars on the other hand have already made it to the playoffs with 8-3. If the team sees a great run in the postseason and possibly a Super Bowl spot, it will certainly be the greatest season a family ever had in the NFL. We guess, Pederson and his son could really call it a ‘family business’ then.

One take at a time

My story of becoming an NFL writer is as interesting as my story of becoming an MMA practitioner. Coming from such a sport where athletes look to knock the brain cells off each other for a living, I liked the aggression that American Football had to offer. Before I even realized it, I religiously started following American football, picking up the most challenging in-depth write-ups.
