It took just one more disastrous performance for Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor to reverse his stance on backup quarterback Jake Browning. Just last week, Taylor was firm in his support of Browning, despite the signal-caller’s struggles in relief of the injured Joe Burrow (out with a Grade 3 turf toe). As per an X post, when asked if Browning would start the upcoming Week 6 game, Taylor was noncommittal but took accountability, saying:

“We’ll see where it goes. Like all personnel decisions, we have to evaluate it. Jake’s been very accountable for how the game went for him. I’ve got to be accountable for how the game went for me as well.”

Looks like, at least now, the head coach’s mind is about to be a bit flexible. On Sunday, Taylor watched Browning struggle yet again, throwing three interceptions in a 37-24 loss to the Detroit Lions. After the game, it appears Taylor is finally ready to consider a quarterback change at least.

While Browning did secure wins for the team two seasons ago, he has gone a dismal 0-3 as the starter this year. Considering his most recent performance, his three interceptions have put him in a tight spot. Especially when there’s been talk about trading him for young players like Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Kirk Cousins.

Who is a potential QB to replace Jake Browning if Zac Taylor is to trade him?

The Cincinnati Bengals are in a tough spot right now! It’s a classic case of high hopes hitting a wall. They were supposed to be contenders, but things have gone sideways, mostly because their star players are out due to injuries. The immediate problem is their quarterback, Jake Browning. He’s been really inconsistent early in the season, and the team is worried enough that they might actually bench him.

If the Bengals do sit Browning, they don’t have a lot of great options waiting on the bench:

  • Brett Rypien: He’s a veteran backup, but his history isn’t too reassuring. He hasn’t played much recently, and when he has, his stats show he throws almost twice as many interceptions as touchdowns. His overall performance rating is pretty low. It doesn’t look like he’d be much of an improvement.
  • Sean Clifford: This guy is a total mystery. He’s a rookie, and he’s barely played in the NFL at all—just one completed pass! They have no idea how he’d perform under pressure.

The Bengals are running out of time to fix this. The next few games are huge. They have to decide if they’re going to stick with Jake Browning and hope he suddenly gets much better. If not, they’ll have to roll the dice on an inexperienced backup.
