Odell Beckham Jr. had a rough ride last year after signing a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. He played just nine games before Miami waived him in December 2024, and so far, he hasn’t landed with a new team for 2025. But don’t think for a second that the fire to not just play, but to chase a Super Bowl, is gone. The 32-year-old wideout still has his sights set on a few teams, and yes, the Kansas City Chiefs are definitely on that shortlist.

“You can say whatever you want about me,” Beckham said during Tuesday’s appearance on The Pivot Podcast. “I stand firm in knowing who I am today. I ain’t never cheated anybody but myself. … I’m going to stand on that and I’m going to keep it going. And then you’re going to see me, maybe with the Steelers or the Rams or if the Chiefs want to call me. Then I’ll be playing in a Super Bowl this year.”

Beckham clearly wants a shot with the Chiefs this season, no denying that. But it naturally makes you wonder: Does Andy Reid actually want to bring him into the mix, or does the team even have a real need at wide receiver right now? It’s unlikely for 3 good reasons, and that’s where the conversation begins.

Odell Beckham Jr. is a veteran enduring his rough phase

Back when Odell Beckham Jr. was with the New York Giants, he was definitely reputed for his on-field performance. After all, the wideout put up some serious numbers too: Five 1,000+ yard seasons in his first six years in the league, including one with the Cleveland Browns. Fast forward to now, and the narrative has shifted.

Beckham has been bouncing around the league for the past few seasons. Of course, on the journey, he won a Super Bowl ring with the Los Angeles Rams and had a decent stint with the Baltimore Ravens. But things went south in the 2024 season with the Dolphins. He signed a one-year deal with Miami, played just nine games, racked up a mere 55 yards, and was waived by the team.

On top of that, he’ll turn 33 just next month. For a wideout-needy team, he still could be a decent option. But it’s Andy Reid’s Chiefs we’re talking about here.

Andy Reid doesn’t seem to have a need on the offense

At some point earlier this season, the Chiefs indeed seemed like a wideout-needy team. Rashee Rice is serving a six-week suspension. Xavier Worthy was down with an injury and missed multiple weeks before finally hitting the gridiron. But fast forward to now, the Chiefs don’t seem to have a need on the offensive side of the ball, especially on the WR unit.

And yes, bringing Beckham into their receiving group doesn’t really solve the problems they actually have. The reasons, however, are tangible. The Chiefs are currently 2-3, sure. But the silver lining is that their WR corps has finally found its footing. Leading the chorus is definitely Hollywood Brown.

The wideout has suited up in all five weeks so far and has tallied 257 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, Worthy surely hit a rough patch when he went down with a shoulder dislocation on the Chiefs’ first offensive play of the season. But he’s already returned to the lineup and has tallied 5 receptions for 83 yards and 6 receptions for 42 yards in the last couple of games, respectively. On top of that, Rice is expected to return after Week 6.

Another reason Andy Reid might pass on Beckham? The Chiefs’ real needs are on defense through the first five weeks, not offense. Steve Spagnuolo’s unit has allowed the seventh-most yards per carry across five weeks and is in the bottom ten in pass rush and run defense. The signs are clear: Instead of spending assets on offensive needs, Reid might want to address the defensive needs.

Odell Beckham Jr. is of no use for the next six weeks

A delay is expected in Beckham’s comeback this season. The crystal? A six-week suspension. During his appearance on The Pivot Podcast, the 32-year-old wideout announced that he has accepted a six-week suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

“In hindsight, I should have just taken it,” the three-time Pro Bowler said. “Had the six games, got punished then, let it blow over.”

Per ESPN, the suspension appeared on the NFL’s official transactions wire on Tuesday, which means only one thing. Starting from Tuesday, he has to miss six weeks of games. That said, Beckham will be 33 by the time his suspension ends. He wants to play for the Chiefs, along with a couple of other teams, but he’ll be of no use for the next six weeks.
