The Chiefs will host the Ravens in Week 4, and Patrick Mahomes knows he can’t let last week’s mistake happen again. Yes, we’re talking about that screen pass to Isiah Pacheco that went completely sideways and almost gave the Giants a touchdown. The silver line, though, is that the Chiefs’ quarterback has already admitted that he needs to clean it up—no more throwing blindly and hoping it works.

“I got to see where I’m throwing before I throw it,” Mahomes said when asked what was going through his head during that blunder. “You know that we had called a play, and you don’t want those short completions in that two-minute type tempo, and so you kind of take, we say take the incompletion, and so I kind of had went to burn it at his (Pacheco) feet, and then seeing him as I was throwing it.
“Obviously, he was backwards, and that’s why I knew immediately when I threw it, but you got to just see the guy before you throw it, and there obviously I’m trying to throw it out to him in the flat and everything like that, but I got to see where he’s at.” Here’s how it all went down.

The Chiefs and Giants tied the game 6-6 in the second quarter of Week 3. Pacheco, after getting turned around, opened up the wrong way and ended up facing the Chiefs’ own end zone. Meanwhile, Mahomes, feeling pressure, fired a screen pass in his direction. Normally, that pass might have landed safely near Pacheco. But this was far from a normal situation.

Considering the back was behind the line of scrimmage, the pass went down as a second-and-10 fumble for the Chiefs. Pacheco made a mistake, and so did Mahomes. However, the quarterback’s presence of mind saved the day for the team as Mahomes scrambled to recover the ball, preventing a potential turnover. Fast forward to now, and Patrick Mahomes has only one mantra: He can’t throw a pass blindly.

“He’s (Pacheco) trying to chip,” Mahomes added, “and give me time to throw the ball down the field, and so, luckily, I was able to get the ball back. And then defense was able to get a huge stop for us there in the end of the half. But I gotta be better at not just throwing it blindly.” Despite the blunder, the fourth-year back rushed for 45 yards on 10 carries. Mahomes, meanwhile, completed 22-of-37 passes for 224 yards and racked up one touchdown to walk out with the first win of the season.
Andy Reid addressed the mistake that needs to be fixed
The criticism around Isiah Pacheco’s blunder in the second quarter remains palpable. But many argue that the RB’s actions in Week 3 were unintentional. The Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reid, is one such personality. “Yeah, we weren’t trying to. Not once or twice,” the head coach clarified after the game.

“So, we don’t want that. But he (Pacheco) was trying to chip on the tackle and got caught up in there, and it bumped him out too wide. So, we’ll we’ll fix that.” Reid further explained that the fourth-year RB will be better next time as the Chiefs host the Ravens in Week 4. But many, like the Chiefs’ offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz, observed that coach Reid prefers to point out such mistakes behind closed doors.
No doubt, Week 3 wasn’t exactly a highlight reel for Pacheco, but the head coach still thought he put in a solid performance. “I was probably the most happy for Pacheco coming home and putting up a 4.5 yard-per-carry shot out there, which was good,” Reid said. Taken all together, a couple of things seem clear ahead of the Week 4 game. First, Reid believes that Pacheco will get better. Second, Patrick Mahomes admitted that he just can’t throw passes blindly.
