The NFL trade deadline always brings a shocker, and this year, the New York Jets delivered the biggest surprise of all. They have agreed to trade star cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts. The news came out just hours before the deadline, with NFL reporter Ian Rapoport simply tweeting the stunning message on his social media handle X.

The Colts had to give up their two first-round draft picks and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell to bring Sauce Gardner to their team. Whether this trade will be beneficial or not, only time can tell. But for now, what we know is, the trade is definitely a shocker for the Jets fans as well as the players of the team.

The team is struggling at 1-7, and everyone expected them to sell off players. But nobody thought they’d trade Gardner, who is one of the best young players in football. It’s even more confusing because they just signed him to a four-year, $120 million contract only five months ago, making him the highest-paid cornerback ever!

But the trade has definitely proven the saying that the NFL is known for its unpredictable nature. In simple terms, if one has to put it, it will be that the Jets decided the price was too high for a player they felt wasn’t playing his absolute best. While Gardner is known to deliver his absolute best, this season, he has had his weak moments. He hasn’t gotten an interception this season, and his penalty calls have gone up.

On the other hand, the Jets had put in rookie player Azareye’h Thomas, who played well in place of Gardner when he was out with a concussion. They must have felt they could get by without the 25-year-old. Even though the trade price was high, spreading the money out made the payout manageable. They have decided to pay the player $131.5 million for 5.5 years, as per reports.

“Having the opportunity to acquire a talented player like Sauce Gardner was one we did not want to pass on,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said in a statement.

This move, which sent the two-time All-Pro cornerback from a 1-7 team to a 7-2 contender, instantly became the biggest shocker of the season. It wasn’t just the fans who were floored; it was his own locker room.

The Killer B’s, along with Jermaine Johnson, react to Sauce Gardner’s trade

The timing of the trade, mere hours before the deadline, was especially jarring. Head coach Aaron Glenn had reportedly stated on Monday that Gardner was one of three players clearing concussion protocol and expected to return to practice that very week. Instead of seeing him back on the field, the team learned he was headed to Indianapolis.

And the Killer B’s couldn’t control their reactions. Breece Hall, a player whose own cryptic social media posts have hinted at wanting a trade, didn’t hold back. Hall posted a viral GIF of a black man peeping from behind a pillar, clearly suggesting his own surprise and perhaps a renewed desire to join the trade. Hall later posted (and then deleted) a more direct message saying he was, “Sick about my bruddas man happy for them but man I’m sick rn,” referring to both Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who was also traded shortly after.

Jets running back Braelon Allen simply posted a classic, shocked Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson GIF.

New York Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who himself was a subject of trade rumors, posted a shocked Brian from Family Guy GIF alongside a link to the trade reports.

For Gardner, the move is an immediate upgrade. Meanwhile, the Colts organization and his new teammates were ecstatic. Veteran wideout Michael Pittman Jr. was among several Colts players who publicly expressed their excitement about having the All-Pro corner join the team, signaling a clear shift in the franchise’s trajectory for the rest of the season.
