He wrote the reason for this retirement, “My purpose has been fulfilled in this sport, but my kids are more important to me than football. I’ve had a hell of a career, and even though it’s ending in a unique way, I’m cool with that because for once I’m putting my family first and I’m proud and excited about that decision.”

Howard, a 32-year-old cornerback (a defensive position) who had been named to the Pro Bowl four times, had just started playing for the Indianapolis Colts. He only played four games before retiring. He had actually taken off the entire 2024 season and only signed with the Colts this past August.  Even though he was back, the game didn’t feel the same. The text points out that he was living alone in temporary housing in Indianapolis, and being away from his family started to become too hard.

Howard’s 2025 season with the Colts has been a real rollercoaster. He started with a high note, racking up 11 total tackles in 4 games and even recovering a fumble during the season-opening blowout victory over the Dolphins. Unfortunately, the last two weeks have been brutal. Against the Rams, he was targeted heavily and struggled significantly, allowing seven catches for 112 yards and a touchdown in the 27-20 loss, according to Pro Football Focus.

This poor run began in Week 2, where the Denver Broncos also had his number, torching him for eight receptions on eight targets for 78 yards and two touchdowns. It was clear he had hit a tough patch and needed to find his footing fast. Instead, the player decided to put a stop. As he made his retirement official, numerous people expressed their opinion of the sudden decision.

Howard made his priorities clear, as he wrote, “Throughout my career I’ve always played football for the love of the sport. I enjoyed everything that came with being part of the NFL. It was my passion for the game that drove me. I love and appreciate the Miami Dolphins for drafting me and giving me the chance to play pro football. I cannot thank the Indianapolis Colts enough for letting me continue to live out my dream.”

The universal respect for Howard’s career was immediately evident in the comments section of his post, as fellow players and his former team acknowledged his impact.

Miami Dolphins (Official Account): “👏🐬” Howard walked away just shy of 30 picks, with all 29 coming during his time in Miami.

Other comments congratulated Xavien for his career, calling it legendary as Jalen Ramsey, Pittsburgh Steelers Cornerback, wrote “LEGENDARY CAREER! Respect through the roof! much love 🤟🏾”. Pat Surtain, Denver Broncos Cornerback: “Legendary Career Brotha !! Congrats” Camryn Bynum (Teammate of Xavien’s): “Much love, fam! Well deserved and a legendary career.” As a professional, Xavien led the entire NFL in picks, tying the Dolphins’ single-season record, and earned First-Team All-Pro honors.

Jonnu Smith (Teammate) commented, “Congratulations on a great career and retirement as well, homie. Well deserved.” A testament to his constant disruption, he retired just five pass breakups short of the 100 mark.

While the Colts tried to give him time to re-evaluate his decision, Howard stood firm, choosing his family over the stage of the professional game.
