The Washington Commanders‘ offense, under Kliff Kingsbury’s watch and with Jayden Daniels under center, is easily one of the best in the league. Still, Kingsbury’s unit has been dealing with a recurring issue: sluggish starts and costly turnovers. And the 25-24 Week 6 loss to the Chicago Bears was no different.

The Commanders turned the ball over three times in that game, but it was the late fourth-quarter mistake that stung the most. With a chance to seal the win by running out the clock, second-year quarterback Daniels fumbled. The Bears recovered, and just like that, Washington walked away with a heartbreaking 25-24 loss.

And that fumble didn’t sit well with at least one Commanders legend: Robert Griffin III. Griffin, frustrated with the loss and turnovers, took to his social media and dropped a couple of lines in reaction.

“THAT CAN’T HAPPEN,” he wrote. “BALL SECURITY IS EVERYTHING!” And that wasn’t all from the former Washington QB either. In his next post, he straight-up called out the offense for three turnovers.

“The Washington Commanders handed this win to the Chicago Bears. You can’t lose the turnover battle and have the unforced error of the fumble on the QB-RB exchange with 3 mins left in the game as you are driving to go win the game. Period,” Griffin wrote.

Unfortunately, ball security seemed like the only thing that the Commanders struggled with. Late in the fourth quarter, the Commanders faced third and one at the Chicago 40-yard line. Daniels could convert it for a fresh set of downs. Which is exactly why he attempted to hand the ball to his running back, Jacory Croskey-Merritt.

But it was a rainy Monday night. The ball was wet. The hands were probably slippery, and just like that, the ball squirted out of the quarterback’s hands. They were made to pay by the Bears. A moment later, the Bears’ Nahshon Wright recovered the fumble, and the Bears notched up a game-winning drive, as Jake Moody hauled in a 38-yard field goal as time expired.

“I just lost the ball. Completely my fault,” the former Offensive Rookie of the Year said. “Didn’t give Bill a chance. It’s my fault.” Indeed! The Commanders are now sitting at 3-3 after six weeks. The offense isn’t ugly, sure. But it’s the costly turnovers and slow starts that are bothering Jayden Daniels and his unit.

Jayden Daniels’ unit is struggling with multiple turnovers

There were plenty of reasons behind the Commanders’ Week 6 loss, but a couple stood out: The rainy night and those three turnovers. And while the weather definitely made things tricky, Jayden Daniels wasn’t about to use a slippery ball as an excuse.

“I’m not [going to] sit up here and blame it on the elements,” Daniels said after the game, addressing whether the weather caused that crucial fumble. “At the end of the day, I got to focus. I get paid to go out there and focus, play in and play out. I had a lack of focus right there, and it cost us the game.”

Daniels has taken some responsibility for the fumble and the loss. But even before that fumble, the Commanders had already committed a couple of mistakes. For the fourth time in six games, Washington had to overcome a double-digit deficit. Daniels’ unit committed a couple of turnovers in the first quarter itself, while the third one sealed their fate.

Washington faced second-and-5 on their very first possession. The veteran wide receiver, Deebo Samuel Sr., was wide open, and Daniels attempted to hit him. The syncing wasn’t up to the mark, and instead, the QB threw the ball late and behind his WR. The Bears’ safety Jaquan Brisker picked off the throw. The second drive?

Kind of the same story. Trying to make something happen after the handoff, Croskey-Merritt attempted to slip past defenders. But the former Commanders pass rusher Montez Sweat had other plans. He punched the ball out clean, and Washington couldn’t fall on it in time. Just like that, the Commanders gave it away for the second time that night, leading to a 10-0 deficit in the first quarter and 13-0 in the first half.

It wasn’t a great night for Jayden Daniels, who completed 19 of 26 for 211 yards and rushed for 52 more, and the overall offense. But with the Dallas Cowboys lining up next on the road, he’d surely want to bounce back.
