Jerry Jones wanted the Dallas Cowboys to win the Week 5 game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Well, they eventually walked out of the stadium with a 37-22 win, but the victory came with a cost. The NFL slapped the Cowboys’ owner with a $250,000 fine after Jerry reportedly flashed his middle finger towards the fans at MetLife.

Fast forward to now, and if the reports are true, Jerry and the Cowboys are expected to appeal the fine, per sources, as confirmed by the Cowboys’ beat reporter for the Dallas News, Joseph Hoyt. However, Jerry still has until Friday to make the final decision.
Right after the Cowboys’ win over the Jets, videos surfaced on social media showing Jones flashing his middle finger after Dallas’ quarterback, Dak Prescott, racked up his fourth touchdown to take a 37-14 lead. But if you ask Jerry… well, he’d say that the incident was unfortunate and he meant to signal a thumbs-up.

On Tuesday, October 7, Jerry Jones sat down with 105.3 The Fan, where he addressed the controversial incident.

“That was unfortunate,” he insisted. “That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us. There was a swarm of Cowboys fans out in front — not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm of Cowboys, and certainly late in the game. [The gesture] was inadvertent on my part because that was right after we made our last touchdown, and we were all excited about it.
“There wasn’t any antagonistic issue or anything like that. I just put up the wrong show on the hand. That was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can call it accidental. But it got straightened around pretty quick. I had a chance to look at it. It got straightened out pretty quick, but the intention was ‘thumbs up,’ and basically pointing at our fans because everybody was jumping up and down excited.”
Sure, Jerry still has until Friday to make a final decision on his appeal, but it’s not the first time the league has fined an NFL owner for a poor interaction with the fans.
Jerry Jones is the latest victim of a poor interaction with the fans
The incident blew up right after the Cowboys punched in their final touchdown against the Jets. Prescott connected with running back Javonte Williams on a 4-yard pass with under five minutes left. Right after that went down, social media went absolutely haywire. The league stayed quiet at first, but eventually, Jerry Jones got hit with a fine.

But he’s definitely not the first NFL owner to get slapped with something like this. Just last season, the Carolina Panthers‘ owner, David Tepper, was caught on video throwing a drink in the direction of the Jacksonville Jaguars fans. Right after that went down, the league fined him $300,000.
Meanwhile, over a decade ago, then-Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was fined $250,000 for basically doing the same thing. He made an obscene gesture while celebrating a win over the Buffalo Bills. Having said that, Jerry Jones seems to be the latest victim of being fined after a poor interaction with the fans. As things stand, the reports are suggesting that Jones will appeal the fine.
