Essentials Inside The Story

  • Dak Prescott is dealing with more than football right now
  • The breakup shook things behind the scenes
  • Head coach Brian Schottenheimer stepped in with a strong message of belief and comparison

For real NFL fans, the game doesn’t end at the final whistle. True fans are usually just as interested in a player’s personal life as they are in their field stats. Lately, everyone is talking about Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott after his breakup with his fiancée, Sarah Jane Ramos.

Big names like Erin Andrews and Christina Thompson have shown their support, but the strongest comments came from the coaching staff. To be precise, Prescott’s head coach, Brian Schottenheimer, has finally spoken up on the situation.

“Dak and I have had a ton of conversations,” Schottenheimer said about his meeting with the Dallas Morning News. “He’s in a really good spot. Obviously, what he’s dealing with is incredibly tough. But if anyone can handle it, he can.”

Dak and his fiancée, Sara Jane Ramos, reportedly split in early March after rumors started flying that Dak wasn’t being faithful. Sarah didn’t waste any time; she called off the engagement and has been focusing on her kids ever since. Meanwhile, Dak basically disappeared. He stayed out of the spotlight for so long that fans started worrying if he’d be mentally ready to lead the Cowboys’ offense this season.

We finally got a glimpse of him on March 23rd, when he visited his former coach Jason Garrett’s cafe opening. While he looked okay, the concern from the Cowboys’ champ was palpable. However, after Schottenheimer’s statement, the team, along with the fans, can now take a sigh of relief.

Schottenheimer isn’t only concerned about Dak but also for all his players. It is extremely important to know where your player’s mental state lies.

“I try to talk to all the guys. I reach out to most of them. I actually got a plan. I’m a little bit, a little, I guess, obsessive, compulsive in that regard in trying to reach out to position groups to check in,” the coach continued.

“Some of them don’t really reach back out and that’s cool, too. I get it. Hey guys, I get it, you’re on vacation,” the Cowboys coach concluded.

Schottenheimer makes sure to stay in touch so the players know he’s got their backs. Certainly, the value of that support for Dak Prescott cannot be overstated.

But along with this, Schottenheimer has also made a statement that has the entire NFL scratching its head.

Cowboys HC claims Prescott’s leadership matches that of Drew Brees

It’s not every day you hear a quarterback mentioned in the same breath as a Hall of Fame legend, but Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer is doing exactly that. During the NFL’s annual meetings in Arizona, Schottenheimer didn’t hold back his admiration for Dak Prescott.

He drew a direct line between Prescott and New Orleans Saints icon Drew Brees, noting that both men possess a rare, elite level of leadership.

“I’ve always said, man, Drew Brees is one of the greatest leaders I’ve ever been around,” Schottenheimer explained. “And then I met Dak, and they’re on the same level, and I think that’s a compliment to both guys.”

The 2025 season saw its ups and downs as the Cowboys finished with a frustrating 7-9-1 record and missed the postseason. But Prescott’s individual performance remained a highlight that the fans spoke about for a long time.

His stats were great as he totaled over 4,500 passing yards and 30 touchdowns while maintaining a high completion rate. Even in a year where the team struggled, Prescott’s consistency ranked among the top ten quarterbacks in the league. And it looks like, for this reason, the HC put him in the league of elites.

Schottenheimer acknowledged that every great player he’s coached has their own style. The reason for the comparison between Brees and Prescott is the way they command a room.

“Well, I think I was fortunate enough to coach all those guys. They’re all amazing, they’re all different,” he noted. “I pull different things from different guys to this day.”

For Cowboys fans, this high praise offers a bit of relief after a tough season where the team struggled.

If Prescott can continue to lead with the same confidence as a Super Bowl champion Brees, there is a strong belief within the organization that Dallas can turn things around and become a serious contender in 2026.
