A wave of change, or let’s just say mutual breakups, seems to have started in Miami. On Friday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Miami Dolphins and longtime general manager Chris Grier met in the morning and agreed to part ways after a humiliating 28-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. Grier had been with the organization since 2000 and had held the GM role since 2016, making this a pretty significant shake-up.

“This morning, I made the decision along with general manager Chris Grier to mutually part ways,” the Dolphins’ owner, Stephen Ross, said in a statement. Schefter added that executive Champ Kelly will step in as the team’s interim GM following Grier’s exit. Meanwhile, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted that no coaching changes are expected right now, which means head coach Mike McDaniel’s job appears safe, at least for the moment.

With that in mind, let’s break down what’s known about Grier’s contract, salary, and overall situation.

Is Chris Grier’s contract and salary with the Dolphins known?
Chris Grier’s been around the Dolphins organization for what feels like forever, over a couple of decades, to be exact. He started out as an area scout, worked his way up to national scout, then director of college scouting, and finally landed the GM job in 2016. By 2019, the team handed him the keys to the whole operation, giving him full control over football decisions.
During his tenure as the GM, Grier oversaw significant roster changes, including the drafting of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the arrival of Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey. However, as a GM, Grier was heavily criticized, as he failed to build a competitive roster.
Additionally, he signed off on Tagovailoa’s long-term contract extension, which allowed the QB to earn $150 million over three years. But when it comes to Grier’s own paycheck and net worth, things get a bit murky. There’s no public info on what he’s been earning as the Dolphins’ GM, even after nearly a decade in charge.

What’s next for the former Dolphins’ GM?
“I have always been and remain committed to building a winning team that consistently competes for championships,” the Dolphins’ owner said on his decision to fire Chris Grier. “I am incredibly proud of our leadership as an NFL organization and our continued commitment to the community, but our performance on the field and our team-building process have not been good enough. There are no excuses.”
Despite a poor finish in the 2024 season, Ross decided to retain Grier for the GM post in 2025. But fast forward to now, and the Dolphins’ decision to let go of Grier just a few days before the trade deadline, after a humiliating loss to the Ravens, and with the team currently sitting at 2-7, means just one thing: the Miami team is ready to hit the reset button.
Which naturally raises a question: what’s next for the former Dolphins’ GM? Considering Miami hasn’t won a playoff game since 2000 and has gone 77-80 under Grier’s watch, it’s tough to say if he’ll land another GM gig anytime soon. As for the Dolphins, they’re reportedly gearing up for a rebuild and could be eyeing a fresh face to take over the front office.
