The New York Giants are facing the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4, and finally, the quarterback situation has changed for the Big Blue. Rookie Jaxson Dart, the team’s first-round pick from the most recent draft, has officially taken over from the 36-year-old Russell Wilson.

The real twist, though?

Even before the rookie quarterback could snap the ball for his first drive as the Giants’ starter, Brian Daboll had already made a call. As confirmed by the Giants’ beat writer, Pat Leonard, of NY Daily News Sports, the head coach sent Wilson as the team’s captain on the field along with Brian Burns and Darius Slayton.

“Brian Daboll sends out backup QB Russell Wilson out as a game captain with Brian Burns and Darius Slayton despite benching Wilson for Jaxson Dart,” Leonard shared the news via his ‘X’ handle.

Throughout the offseason, the head coach reiterated that Wilson was their starting quarterback. But after three games, three losses, and the frustrated crowd that booed the veteran, Daboll pulled the plug and named Dart as the Week 4 starter.

But still, the HC decided to give Wilson some recognition and responsibility by naming him the game captain against the Chargers. Daboll didn’t go into the exact reasons behind benching Wilson. But he made it clear that starting Dart was his call.

“The conversations that I’ve had with these young men will be private,” Daboll said on Wednesday.

“The details will be private. All I can tell you is we’re going with Jaxson and we’re getting ready to play, so I’m not going to add too much to it. Those are private conversations. It’s my decision and we’re going with Jaxson.”

Having said that, the Giants believe that they could win the Week 4 game with Dart under the centre. As for Wilson’s future? That remains to be seen.

Where does Russell Wilson go from here?

“I’m not done,” Russell Wilson said the day after the Giants handed the starting job to Dart. The signs are clear: Even though he’s bouncing around the league the past few years, the 36-year-old isn’t thinking about hanging up his cleats anytime soon. Which naturally makes you wonder: Where does Wilson go from here?

The QB has confirmed that he’ll be mentoring Dart moving forward, saying, “I know that I’m going to respond in the right way every day.” That said, Wilson could still become a trade option before the November 4 deadline. Right now, he’s sitting alongside Kirk Cousins as one of the top quarterbacks available for any team suddenly in need of a long-term starter because of injuries.

The Giants brought Wilson in on a one-year, $10.5 million deal, with $8 million of that as a signing bonus. That means if a trade happens, the new team would only take on a small piece of his $2 million base salary. Right now, the Bengals are the only team without their starter, Joe Burrow, thanks to a Grade 3 turf toe.

But the deadline’s November 4, and injuries can change things fast. More teams might suddenly need a starting QB deep into the season. And Wilson could get his shot. We’ll see how things work out for the veteran Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
