The New York Giants‘ rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart, looked like a different player last week, going turnover-free and leading the team to their first win of the season. But fast forward to Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints, and it was a rough day.

Dart threw three of the team’s five total turnovers, and the Giants dropped their fourth game, falling to the Saints 26-14 on Sunday. However, when Brian Daboll was asked about Dart’s poor performance, the head coach made it clear: He isn’t giving up on his young QB after just one bad game.

“I think they all respect Jaxson,” Daboll said, addressing Dart’s teammates. “You know, first talents one and how he’s a pretty humble guy. They see how he works. They know he’s a rookie. Again, there’s gonna be ups and downs, and there’s no young quarterback I’d rather have to work with than Jaxson.”

Dart entered Week 5 and walked out after completing 26-of-40 for 202 yards with 2 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions. But it wasn’t just Dart whose performance went sideways. Wideout Darius Slayton and RB Cam Skattebo each had key fumbles that the Saints turned into 10 points, really swinging momentum in New Orleans’ favor.

In the process, the Saints finally take a lead, only for the second time this season. Before the Week 5 game, the Saints had barely been in the lead all season. We’re talking about just 4 minutes and 15 seconds total, which was the least in the NFL so far. Their only lead before was in their season opener against the Arizona Cardinals.

However, in Week 5 against New York, the Saints finally took a 16-14 lead by halftime. That lead came after the Giants started coughing up the ball, committing the first of five straight turnovers. Right after that went down, Jaxson Dart owned up to his role in those mistakes.

Jaxson Dart took the blame for the turnovers

At one point in the game, the Giants gave the ball away on five straight possessions, stretching from late in the first quarter all the way into the fourth. Following the game, Dart took full responsibility for his three turnovers in the second half.

“I told as many guys as I can in the locker room, this one is on me, and I’m going to get better,” the rookie said. “I expect myself to play better in these games and to win them.”

First, there was the fumble in the third quarter while Dart was scrambling near midfield. He lost control of the ball on his own, without being touched, and the Saints capitalized on it. That play really shifted the game in New Orleans’ favor, which explains why the rookie was so quick to take the blame.

Then, in the fourth quarter, Dart’s first interception came on a fourth-and-6. Trying to make a big play, he threw a pass that was intercepted by Saints cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. That pick was essentially a failed punt, giving New Orleans excellent field position and a momentum boost.

Meanwhile, the second interception also happened in the fourth quarter due to a miscommunication with one of his rookie receivers. Dart threw the ball, thinking his target would be in the right spot, but the timing was off, and McKinstry picked it off again. That made two turnovers in a row, both directly handing the Saints more opportunities to score

“I mean, I’m the leader of the offense,” Jaxson Dart added. “Anytime those things happen, it kind of falls back on the leaders. I take that responsibility.” But then again, it was just his second start in the NFL. With the Philadelphia Eagles lining up next, the rookie quarterback is now expected to bounce back as the Giants now sit at 1-4.
