After firing head coach Brian Daboll, the New York Giants are moving fast, but they are being smart about their next hire. General Manager Joe Schoen told FOX Sports insider Jay Glazer exactly what they are looking for and what they are not looking for.

The Giants plan to only look at coaches who already work in the NFL. And Schoen wants someone who is great at demanding toughness from his team and helping the quarterback improve. And while there are several names rumored to be the next HC for the Giants, Glazer believes the Rams’ defensive coordinator, Chris Shula, can be a potential Brian Daboll replacement.
“A name that’s starting to pop up, Chris Shula, the guy who’s the defensive coordinator for the Rams,” Glazer said. “I’ll tell you this, of all the coaches Sean McVay has kind of pushed along to be the next head coach, he’s done more with Chris Shula than all of them combined. These two guys are best friends.”

Shula has been with the Rams since 2017, working his way up. This year, the Rams’ defense is having a great season and is one of the toughest units in the league, ranking second in the NFL in points allowed. Shula is known for helping develop young, talented players like edge rusher Jared Verse.
While there are speculations, it’s worth noting that nothing is confirmed or has been officially announced by the team as of now. So, this information is susceptible to change.

Giants to conduct a complete review of GM Joe Schoen
The Giants are once again in chaos. After a brutal 2-8 start to the 2025 season, the team fired head coach Brian Daboll, erasing the memory of his 2022 Coach of the Year award. The sudden move came right after a painful 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears, which extended the Giants’ road losing streak to a miserable 11 games.

Now, all attention is focused on the man who hired Daboll: General Manager Joe Schoen. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Schoen’s job security isn’t locked in. Giants co-owner John Mara and the team’s top management are planning a full review of the organization’s direction at the end of the year. As she writes,
“I’m also told there haven’t been any serious meetings yet between ownership and GM Joe Schoen about the traits they want in the next head coach, though Schoen is leading the search. He’s on a five-year deal set to expire after 2026, so long-term certainty isn’t guaranteed. “

While the coach is gone, General Manager Joe Schoen has been retained and is currently leading the search for Daboll’s permanent successor. Schoen is in the fourth year of a five-year contract that is set to expire after the 2026 season. So once the season gets over, speculations are there that the GM will also be evaluated. This will determine the best course of action for the future of the organization.

Despite the team’s failures, most people around the league believe Schoen’s job is safe for now. This optimism is mainly because of the strong rapport he has with ownership, which reportedly holds him in high regard.
This end-of-season review remains a critical juncture for the entire franchise. Schoen now has one last chance to make the right hire and guide the team back toward the winning ways the Giants fan base desperately craves.
