Odell Beckham Jr. dropped a crucial touchdown pass in the Giants vs Miami Dolphins preseason clash. It has now pushed the veteran wide receiver towards serious uncertainty about his future, threatening his chances of making the roster. Dan Duggan, Giants beat reporter for The Athletic, has made it even more difficult for OBJ.

“This is a good example of why the ‘getting open’ narrative on Odell is kinda silly. All NFL receivers “get open.” Everyone is just hyper-focused on Odell,” he wrote on X. “We have the broadcast highlighting him getting open while running an out against zone coverage. It’s a production business. He just hasn’t.”

Not to forget, creating separation has been a goal Beckham had set for himself walking into this season. 

“I’m not so much caught up in what numbers are going to be, I just want to be the best me that I can be,” he said during the training camp. “I want to get open and create separation, catch the ball, hopefully score a lot, and have fun. That’s really all it is for me.”

Per multiple reports from camp, Beckham has actually been successful in getting open during training camp. However, he wasn’t targeted much. But the ability to create those opportunities is crucial for Beckham, who is buried deep in the Giants’ WR room, which already has starters in Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton II. He is returning to the game after missing a whole year of action, which means every chance to make a mark counts.

“Beckham has proven he can get open, but is that enough?” ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported on Sunday. Unless the Giants trade a wide receiver, there probably won’t be room for him on the roster.”

Beckham finished his preseason debut outing vs the Vikings with two catches for six yards. Those aren’t eye-catching numbers, but he marked plays worth some attention. But the drop in the Dolphins game will haunt the wideout for some time.

“I’m pissed,” he said postgame. “This is the one that keeps me up at night, it’s a play that I know I can make … I don’t care if it was high or lower, wherever it was at, it’s on me. I feel like if the ball’s anywhere near me, if it touches my fingertips, I’m supposed to catch it. So, that’s on nobody but me.

For someone who etched himself onto NFL history with that iconic one-handed touchdown catch in his prime, the missed score is something OBJ would like to forget quickly.

Time to see if the mistake costs him high in the Giants’ crowded wide receiver room. New York will play home rival New York Jets next, setting an interesting stage for Beckham to prove he belongs with the team.
