The Broncos signed Super Bowl XLVIII winner Russell Wilson for a whopping five-year, $245 million contract last year. But after failing to send the team to the playoffs last season and complicating it in the current one, his Broncos career has landed in jeopardy. At least, on the analytical side.

Now, pundits have raised the question: should the QB really come back to Denver next season? But as much as their explanation has caused a surprise, the quick realization of the ugly truth has hit the Broncos harder. Amidst this conundrum, the Broncos are still hoping for a miracle to occur with 2 games left in the regular season.

Fox Sports’ First Things First co-host Chris Broussard raised the question at the talk show. Citing the Broncos’ humiliating 42-17 loss to the Lions that may well have ended the former’s playoff hope, Broussard asked the question on everyone’s mind. “His stats look good. I mean lately, you know he’s had some more interceptions but he clearly hasn’t been as good as the stats say,” he said.

But if the QB had to be terminated prematurely of his contract, then the next question remains: who will fill in for the role? Which didn’t escape Broussard’s mind. “If I have to pay him $50 million essentially next year anyway as far as cap hit, who am I getting to replace? That’s why I think he’ll be back,” he said, sharing the real concern there. According to the analyst, the QB was likely heading back to Denver for unavailability reasons. And it couldn’t be more true.

Either the Broncos have to draft a rookie and start him over Wilson, or get a seasoned, quality QB which is even harder to find these days. Thus the analyst came to a surprising conclusion. What if Wilson still led them to the playoffs? It’s difficult, but still entirely possible.

Can Russell Wilson save his Broncos career by guiding the team to the postseason?

According to ESPN’s NFL Playoff Machine, the team could only make it to the playoffs if they win their last two games, and that’s a big if, unless they get hit with a stroke of luck. In brief, the Broncos are 7-7 in the season and would make it to the postseason if they go 9-7, and every other team with a 7-win record stays out of the 9-win mark after the next two games. Which will clear the path for the Orange Crush.

Some teams closest to the Broncos are the Steelers, Buccaneers, Chargers, Texans, etc. Each of their upcoming games needs to be strategically played to favor the Wilson-led side, which is probably too much to ask for. All of these could have been avoided without the humiliating loss to the Lions, but you can’t really turn back time.

Wilson has carried the ‘Mr Comeback’ moniker for long. But for this one time at least, he needs a favor from luck to save the season and possibly his under-scrutiny Broncos career. What do you think the fate of the Broncos will be?
