Less than a couple of days after trading Joe Flacco, the Cleveland Browns completed yet another roster move. The team has decided to trade the former first-round cornerback Greg Newsome II (along with a sixth-round pick) to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Tyson Campbell. Right after the trade went down, the Jaguars’ general manager, James Gladstone, made his expectations clear for the CB.

“We are trying to win football games now, and Greg (Newsome) helps us do that, as his skillset is a strong fit for our defensive scheme, which puts more vision on the quarterback and will lean on Greg’s ability to find the football,” said Gladstone in a statement, per the Jaguars’ official site. “We will continue to be aggressive to make us the best possible team this season.”

The trade doesn’t only seem about winning. There’s a financial side to this trade in the mix as well. Campbell had just signed a big four-year, $76.5 million contract in 2024. And by trading him, the Jags had freed themselves from that enormous commitment in future years. Campbell has totaled 34 tackles across five games this season and allowed just 19 of 37 passes thrown his way, averaging 16.4 yards per catch.
As for Newsome, the 25-year-old corner is currently on his fifth-year option and will become a free agent in 2026. This means the Jaguars will spend more money this year, but they’ll have more flexibility with their salary cap later. The fifth-year CB is likely to play outside cornerback, considering Jourdan Lewis handles the nickel position.
Newsome has been playing on the outside this season and is already making an impact. At 25 years old, he has allowed just 15 completions on 23 targets, giving up 13.0 yards per catch while recording three pass deflections. Over his 59-game career, including 47 starts, he has totaled 178 tackles with 140 solo stops, 37 passes defended, six tackles for loss, three interceptions, two quarterback hits, and one sack, according to the Jaguars’ official site. Now, he’s set to suit up for a new team after bidding farewell to the Browns.

The Browns received a five-word message from Greg Newsome
The Cleveland Browns drafted Greg Newsome with the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. But the corner has been shifted certain times during his time in Cleveland. He kicked off his NFL career as an outside corner, then shifted to the nickel position the very next year.

Fast forward to now, and he’s back on the outside after Martin Emerson Jr. went down with a season-ending Achilles injury during training camp. Only this time, he’ll no longer play for the Browns. Moments after the trade news broke, Greg Newsome took to his ‘X’ handle and shared a farewell message to Cleveland.
“Love Cleveland. It’s been real,” Newsome wrote.
As for the Browns, well, the team has been actively making roster moves. Just a couple of days ago, the Browns traded their 40-year-old veteran quarterback, Flacco, to the Cincinnati Bengals. The signs are clear: After dropping four games across the first five weeks, the Cleveland team is preparing to get better heading deeper into the season.
