The Ron Rivera era is over at the Commanders. And the head coach has left the team in a pretty miserable position. Their season ended with a 10-38 loss against the Cowboys and with a 4-13, the worst during Rivera’s tenure, their season came to an end. Having invested a whopping $6.05 billion in the franchise last year, owner Josh Harris is taking a measured approach this time.

Harris has hired two prominent strategic minds to help him with his selection of the Commanders’ next head coach and operations head. And the pair boasts some of the best CVs in the recent history of American sports.

Josh Harris becomes serious with the Commanders’ future

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Harris has hired Bob Myers and Rick Spielman: Two familiar names in the NBA and the NFL circuit. Myers is credited with transforming a few NBA sides into championship-caliber teams, especially the Golden State Warriors, serving as their Head of Basketball Operations and General Manager.

Spielman, on the other hand, is a familiar name in the NFL, for his time with the Vikings. Joining the side in 2006 as the Vice President of Player Personnel, the experienced executive took over the team’s scouting and player operations, and draft preparations. During his time, the Vikings won 4 divisional titles and made 10 playoffs. He was PFW’s executive of the year in 2017.

Clearly, Harris is thinking out of the box to drag the 3x Super Bowl winners out of the depths. But what could be the outcome?

Names that may cross the mind of Josh Harris

Ron Rivera was a defensive coordinator, who failed to improve his preferred area as the Commanders kept getting worse every season. If Harris’ idea takes shape, there are some potential candidates his qualified employees could suggest to him. Primarily the Patriots’ HC Bill Belichick and ex-Chargers’ HC Brandon Staley.

Belichick’s future at New England is all but confirmed, and soon it will be clear to everyone. Known as a master of defense, Belichick lived up to his defensive standard even in his career’s worst-ever season. And it is quite the same for Staley, whose Rams once led the league in total defense, eventually winning the Super Bowl.

There are a few other candidates as well, who might make the executives’ final cut. Going through an extensive process, it will be interesting to see who the Commanders eventually decide to go with after investing the extra effort.
