“I know we want Brock (Purdy) here for a long time, and I believe we will make that happen,” said 49ers owner Jed York. Sounds like a done deal, right? Well, not quite. Despite all the warm fuzzies from York and coach Kyle Shanahan, we still don’t have that official contract of Brock Purdy. It’s like they’re throwing the biggest party in Purdy’s honor, but no one’s handed him the VIP pass yet.
Everyone’s saying the same things that both parties want to work together. But let’s not kid ourselves—until that contract gets inked, we’re all just waiting for the confetti to fall. At this point, the 49ers have a couple of options. Either they could extend his contract (he’s making just $5.1M in 2025) or they could franchise tag him, paying nearly $40M in 2026 and $50M in 2027.
But it’s unlikely the 49ers would tag him. The reason? Well, Purdy wants stability, not a year-to-year guessing game. But here’s the kicker—just as this Purdy deal hangs in the air, the 49ers turned around and handed George Kittle a monster four-year, $76.4 million extension. Great for Kittle—well-deserved—but naturally, it raised eyebrows. Because if you’re handing out bags of cash, the question becomes: does that tighten the window or complicate the numbers for Purdy’s extension?

Some think yes. Others say the cap space shuffle was planned all along. And that’s where ESPN’s Adam Schefter comes in. Schefter believes that Kittle getting a massive four-year deal will not affect Purdy’s deal. “Well, I think it probably will create a little bit of cap space for the 49ers, but I don’t think it has any significant effect in the Brock Purdy deal,” Schefter said.

See, Kittle’s four-year deal includes $40 million in guaranteed money. That means it’ll surely lower his previously scheduled 2025 salary cap number of approximately $22 million. That gives Kyle Shanahan and Co. more room to spend on other players, especially Brock Purdy. Now’s the big question: When will the 49ers extend Purdy’s contract? Well, Adam Schefter guesses that Purdy will get a deal at some point this summer.
“I think that deal is kind of what it is,” Schefter continued, “and I think the two sides have been working on it, and just because George Kittle gets a deal done doesn’t mean that the 49ers are going to up their offer or offer less or have less cash to go around… I still think my guess is it would be tracking to get done at some point this summer.” Will Purdy get a deal or not?
It’s still a question that the 49ers need to answer. Whether at some point this summer or right before the 2025 season, we’ll see how this all works out. Meanwhile, the San Francisco team just granted George Kittle his long-time wish.

The 49ers enhanced Kittle’s contract amid Brock Purdy contract talks
Right after wrapping up his eighth season with the Niners, Kittle made it clear: he wants to retire as a Niner. “I said it yesterday, I want to be a Niner for my entire career,” Kittle said. “I love wearing the Red and Gold. And, whatever the front office wants to do, I’m all ears.”But getting a contract extension was no walk in the park for Kittle. The guy skipped OTAs, and the rumor mill went wild—talks of tension, money drama, even whispers of trade smoke. Kittle shut it down, saying it wasn’t about contracts.
But still, there were no contract talks—until now. On Tuesday, Schefter reported on this official IG handle, writing “Done deal: 49ers six-time Pro-Bowl TE George Kittle has signed a four-year, $76.4 million contract extension that includes $40 million guaranteed.” That said, the deal now keeps Kittle, who has vowed to keep playing “until the wheels fall off,” to play with the 49ers until he hangs up his cleats.
The Niners selected him with a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Right after the Niners’ 2024 season wrapped up, Kittle remarked, “My goal is to wear the red and gold my entire career.” Well, it’s still unclear to say if Kittle will announce his retirement after the end of his current contract. However, the 31-year-old tight end is expected to join the 49ers’ 10-year club.

A club that includes the players who have played in red and gold for 10 consecutive seasons. The club has honored 51 players since the inception of the franchise in 1946. And here’s the wild part: the Niners haven’t included any other player since tackle Joe Staley in 2017. Safe to say that the 4-year deal allows Kittle to ink his name in the club of the legends.
