Right after Breezy Johnson experienced one of the biggest moments of her life, when her boyfriend, Connor Watkins, proposed at the finish line of the women’s Super-G, a wave of criticism surfaced suggesting he had stolen her spotlight. Johnson, however, rejected that framing when she recently appeared on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast. In her view, the proposal didn’t overshadow the moment. It elevated it. Kelce echoed that sentiment, openly backing Johnson’s perspective.

“This is so important,” Kelce said. “Thank you so much for bringing this up because we were just gonna talk about it anyway. I feel very strongly about the fact that people who are trolls and want to be like ‘boo-hoo, that shouldn’t have happened,’ is crazy because what an incredible time.”

Kelce’s comments come against the backdrop of the ongoing narrative surrounding Johnson’s engagement. The alpine skier had already captured gold in the women’s downhill at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Feb. 8. Three days later, she lined up for the women’s Super-G.

Though she crashed early in that race after clipping a gate and losing balance, ending her run, she still walked away with a moment she had long envisioned. Shortly after crossing through the finish area, Watkins dropped to one knee and presented a ring featuring blue and white sapphires set in white gold, placing it on Johnson’s left hand.

But instead of a universal celebration, the proposal sparked debate. Some framed it as Watkins stealing the spotlight from an Olympic gold medalist. Kelce disagreed, and Johnson was equally firm in defending her fiancé, making it clear the proposal was something she had dreamed about for years.

“I did have an inkling that he was gonna do that,” Johnson told CNN. “I had suggested that it was always kind of my dream to get engaged at the Olympics, so, yeah. He planned the whole thing out, and it was a very awesome moment with all of my teammates and friends and family around. It was pretty special.”

The couple met on a dating app a few years ago. Watkins, at the time, didn’t realize Johnson was one of the top skiers in the world. Fast forward, and their story has taken on a very public dimension. Still, Johnson has consistently pushed back against the narrative that anything was taken from her. Speaking with USA Today, she addressed the criticism directly.

“I think there’s a lot of armchair quarterbacks out there that were like, ‘Oh my Gosh, he’s stealing her moment!’ There were people who seemed to think that he did it while I was standing on the medals stand. Let’s not yuck other people’s yum. This is what I wanted… He wasn’t stealing anything.”

So when Kylie Kelce voiced her support for the American Olympic star, it didn’t feel exaggerated. The engagement itself remains in the spotlight, and so does the unconventional finish-line proposal. A moment that even carried a subtle Taylor Swift connection.

Breezy Johnson invited Taylor Swift to her wedding

Breezy Johnson had long hinted that getting engaged at the Olympics was a dream scenario. When that moment finally arrived, it came with a storyline of its own. Watkins presented the ring in a wooden box engraved with the final line of the chorus, “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy,” from Taylor Swift’s song, “The Alchemy.”

Soon after, Johnson made her engagement official on social media. That’s when Swift entered the picture. The pop star jumped into the comment section with a simple but enthusiastic, “CONGRATULATIONS!!!” while adding a few more lyrics. The reaction caught Johnson by surprise, but she made it clear the gesture meant a lot, and that Swift would be more than welcome at the wedding.

“The Taylor Swift comment was not something that I ever expected,” Johnson said. “It was really cool seeing her comments, seeing her just love love…”I mean, listen, Taylor can probably go to any wedding in the U.S. and everybody would welcome her with open arms. She is of course welcome to join.”

Whether Swift, who is herself a bride-to-be, ultimately attends Johnson’s wedding remains to be seen. What is certain, though, is that the Olympic gold medalist is embracing the moment, welcoming the support and tuning out any lingering negativity surrounding her engagement.
