Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown are two of the Detroit Lions’ coachable players, who might not need much coaching. The running back/wide receiver duo has been a big reason the Lions are putting up 230.2 passing yards per game, good for 11th in the league, and 134.8 rushing yards per game, which ranks 7th in the NFL.

And to really put it in perspective, the Lions also dropped a stat that shows why this offense is clicking so well, even without Ben Johnson running the show as coordinator. Gibbs and St. Brown are the first Lions duo to each produce at least 400 scrimmage yards and 5 TDs through the first five games of any season.
The Lions lit up the Cincinnati Bengals 37-24 on Sunday to grab their fourth win of the season. Gibbs teamed up with David Montgomery in the backfield, rushing 12 times for 54 yards and helping the Lions rack up 118 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, Amon-Ra St. Brown led the passing attack, hauling in 8 catches for 100 yards as Detroit totaled 247 passing yards.

In the process, the RB/WR duo completed 400 scrimmage yards through the first five weeks of the season and became the first duo to do so for the Lions. The 23-year-old back has been a monster on the ground with 325 rushing yards, plus he’s chipped in another 112 through the air, giving him 437 total scrimmage yards and 5 touchdowns combined. Gibbs’ been doing it all: Rushing, catching, scoring.

Meanwhile, St. Brown’s been a straight-up receiving machine. Only 7 rushing yards, but 407 receiving yards for a total of 414 scrimmage yards and 6 touchdowns. The writing is on the wall: Jared Goff isn’t shying away from finding his top target and running the offense smoothly. Thanks to Gibbs and St. Brown, the Lions’ quarterback has amassed nearly 1,200 yards with a completion rate of 75.2 while also racking up 12 touchdowns. In the process, he’d led the Lions to a 4-1 track record.

Jahmyr Gibbs’ record with David Montgomery and the Bengals’ 3rd loss
It wasn’t just Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown putting on a show; David Montgomery made his presence felt in Week 5 against the Bengals. Returning to his hometown nearly a decade later, Montgomery showed off his versatility. Having played quarterback at Cincinnati Mt. Healthy High School, he scored both a rushing and a passing touchdown for only the second time in his NFL career. That’s how you make a homecoming count.
The RB rushed for 65 yards on 18 carries with a single score on the ground, while also throwing another through the air. “It’s super meaningful to come back home where it all started for me and being able to show my arm. It was a super special moment,” he said after the game. This marked the 14th time Montgomery and Gibbs each scored a touchdown in the same game, tying them with Dallas legends Emmitt Smith and Daryl Johnston for the most times a duo has done it in NFL history.
As for the Bengals? Well, after Joe Burrow’s injury in Week 2, the Bengals are struggling to find their footing. Since Burrow’s injury, Cincy has dropped three straight games by a combined total of 113-37. And on Sunday as well, the Bengals were trailing 28-3 after three quarters before Jake Browning eventually threw a couple of TD passes to Ja’Marr Chase.

“We hung the defense out to dry a couple times in the first half a couple games in a row. That’s my job. I call the plays on offense. I put that on myself. It just hasn’t been good enough,” the Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said. “I’ve got to keep us out of danger. That’s on me.”
That said, the Lions will now face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6. As for the Bengals, things aren’t looking good as they prepare to face the Green Bay Packers on the road.
