As if Bill Belichick missing the first-ballot Hall of Fame honor was not a joke enough, his former kicker Adam Vinatieri added some more to make Canton laugh on Saturday. As the NFL’s all-time leading scorer stood on the stage, he began with a tear-jerking speech, thanking his family, teams, coaches, and the NFL. It only lasted eight minutes and 15 seconds. 

Then, he came to the topic that reignited the biggest debate surrounding the 2026 Hall of Fame Class: Bill Belichick’s absence from the line-up. But while the Iceman only tried to break some… ice… the jokes didn’t exactly land for everyone. Just days later, an apology followed.

“I wanted it to start sentimental,” Vinatieri said during his appearance on the Dan Patrick Show on August 10. “I wanted to make people laugh, and then I wanted to end it with a bang at the end. So hopefully I accomplished that. If people got offended or thought it was inappropriate, I apologize to you guys.”

As I said, Vinatieri’s 18-minute-long speech was going smoothly before it hit a rough patch for a minute when he tried to make a joke on Belichick. Here is how he delivered arguably the best punchline of the day:

“Unfortunately, Bill couldn’t make it today,” he said on Saturday. “There’s a lot going on at UNC right now. I thought it was because training camp had already started, but in truth, he was judging his girlfriend’s cheerleading competition.”

It was a direct jab at how the eight-time Super Bowl-winning head coach is still finding his footing as the head coach of college football. In his debut season with the North Carolina Tar Heels, his team went 4-8. The longtime coach has also publicly backed his 25-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson in her cheerleading pursuits. Ouch! Fittingly, after missing out on a first-ballot Hall of Fame induction earlier this year, the 74-year-old was absent from the ceremony. However, he had a reason for his jokes.

“The Hall of Famers, the guys that are sitting on the stage, they always tell: ‘Make it short, we don’t wanna be sleeping up here’. So I said, ‘I’m gonna make it entertaining.'”

In his defense, Vinatieri quickly accepted that this was just a joke and that he respected “the greatest coach of all time.” It is understandable why.

Vinatieri began his NFL career with New England as an undrafted rookie in 1996, but his numbers truly plummeted in Belichick’s first season as the Patriots’ head coach. He had the league-high field goal percentage and the longest field goal made on his way to his first Pro Bowl selection. Things only looked up from there.

He went on to spend ten seasons with the Patriots. There, he set franchise records for career points (1,158), consecutive games with a field goal (25), and longest field goal (57 yards in 2002). He retired in 2021 after playing 14 more years with the Indianapolis Colts and added another ring in his very first season there. While it was hard to ignore that he had most success with the partnership of fellow Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, he did not mind taking some humorous swipes at him either on Saturday.

Adam Vinatieri didn’t mind making some more jokes

Tom Brady is the all-time leading passer of the New England Patriots. He was the leader under center when the franchise created the NFL’s modern dynasty. But more than that, according to the testimonies of his various other teammates, he was the best person to ever play with. Vinatieri was okay giving that respect up for a few seconds:

“I was lucky enough to play with the greatest quarterback in the Patriots’ history. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to make it here today…Drew Bledsoe. I had a few more Tom Brady jokes, but I was afraid he’d run up on the stage and maybe give me a ‘Will Smith’ [slap] like he did Logan Paul last month,” he said. 

Keeping the Fanatics Fest joke aside, Vinatieri went on to acknowledge and thank the seven-time Super Bowl champion for the person he was, apart from the great player he turned out to be. 

Vinatieri’s speech was not your usual acceptance speech. It acknowledged everyone, thanked everyone, and, at the end of the day, made many giggle. However, in his attempt to add some humor to his rather long speech, he may have struck some wrong chords.
